I've had two concussions from umpiring. One was from the catcher tossing his mask as he was running down the first base line to backup first. It caught me about an inch above the eye. The other was last season when I took two fastballs to the mask. I also took a heater to the hand and broke two fingers during the same game. That is the only time I have asked a coach to change the catcher. The kid kept ducking away from every pitch. I took the majority in the pads.

I was an athletic trainer for a college football team in a previous life. Saw some pretty nasty injuries. The worst was a cheerleader who broke her neck in a fall.

It is especially important to remember not to remove your mask until the catcher has cleared his. There is a YouTube video I saw quite some time ago of, I believe, a college umpire getting hit by a catcher throwing his mask on a pop up and the ump goes down hard.

Some say cheering isn't a sport. Cheering has really evolved over the years, and is definitely a sport. The skill and athleticism needed is incredible and they keep pushing the limits on higher throws, more turns and flips when being thrown.

And according to NFHS, the sport with the highest number of injuries of any high school sport.

A couple of years ago I was behind the plate for a Jr. Babe game. The kid on the mound had played on a team that had been to the state tournament the year before. He threw a pitch low and in. I had just started to get to the point where I would rest my arms on my quads when I was in position. The batter nicked it, and it came straight back into my left forearm. I thought I had fractured it for sure. Who knows, maybe I did. I never went to the doctor. I drove home with one hand that night and had a bruise on the top and bottom of my arm for a while.

Working A LL majors ( of all things ) last night. Game is going great, visiting team up 4-3 going into bottom of 6. We had only been on the field 1Hr and 15 minutes when the VC felt the need to change catchers.:D::rollinglaugh:. The first pitch is inside and new catcher never touches it and it nails me right on the elbow:hopmad: Hurt like heck and today I can hardly use my left arm. Severe bruise. First solid hit Iv'e taken all season in over 30 games. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

It appears as if this thread was taboo:

Friday, F2 missed an 80-85mph fastball that found my left thumb knuckle. It's now broken.

I've had a unusually high number of catchers this year doing their best impression of Roger Dorn and his olé defense :rollinglaugh:

Oddly enough not the most painful, but definately the most "colorful" (I mentioned on another thread) was a 2 month bruising roughly the shape of my cup after getting hit twice in the same inning.

Imagine the pain if you hadn't been wearing it.

You might want to get that checked out, those are signs of a concussion.

Haven't been injured yet, but I did take my first shot in the throat this past Friday. That sucked.

Oh boy, you're screwed now! Don't you know the one thing you never want to do is tell a group of people that nothing bad has ever happened to you! You've officially been marked!

I think it's because we have a lot of coaches out there that don't have time for their catchers, or they just don't know anything about catching. Nobody is teaching their kids how to block a ball in the dirt anymore.

Getting hit in the throat isn't bad?

I'm still a rookie. My time is coming. My knees are shot. I keep waiting for them to give while I'm making a pivot.

Just left the doctors office, no concussion 

Gave me some musle relaxants for my stiff neck.

Jax,

You might want to try loosening the straps on your mask.

Jax,

Absolutely, loosen so it comes away from your face when you bend over. Good to hear no concussion. Any time you take a shot and have a headache, dizziness, blurred vision, anything like that, check it out.

They are loose but it was just a straight on shot. nowhere for the mask to go.

As in another post, my worst inury is now a torn calf muscle.

When I torn it I was on infield grass and the pain was so sudden and sharp I went down hard.

Even though it was a Little League game I let the F Bomb go and I was told it was very loud.

Had partner, both coaching staffs, and all the infielders around me asking if I was ok.

Doctor says torn calf muscles are a common injury for sprinters and since I was basically doing a very short sprint...BINGO.

BTW...I normally do stretch before a game.

Guess what I did not do pre-game and it was a little cold. :bang:

Anyway for two weeks...:Horse: and my meds

Jax - Glad your ok.
