I gotta wonder what the hell he's doing there to begin with. This article points out that this is following ANOTHER incident where he actually went after players with a Bat! YGTBSM! ;) And according to that article one of those players was still recovering!

Let's put it another way, is there anybody around who would be able to stroll into their work place (off the ball field), take out a 9 iron and get away with thumping one of your office rivals with it? I'm not thinking that bodes well for your employ at that company, or many others in the near future.

I'm sorry but the moment you cross the line of using violence just to get your way, you have crossed a line "normal" society doesn't find acceptable. Incredible.

I love this quote:

"It's unheard of that passion in sports reaches levels on intolerance and violence in professional sports as exhibited by a successful athlete, who many Dominicans admire and love," said Leonardo Matos-Berrido. "The Dominican League, its associates and executives offer our national fans and all the Dominican people, who strongly support baseball, our excuses (sic) for this regrettable event."

Good for them for leaving. MiLB should reconsider sending their guys to the DR. I realize the training and experience they get is great, as well as the much needed off-season money, but it doesn't appear to be worth the safety of the umps.

Warren,

This has been a problem facing MiLB umpires for years. They are not sent by Minor League Baseball but 'requested' by MAJOR League baseball. In theory, they can turn down the request but would you turn down a request from a potential employer you've been striving to work for years? This sort of 'blackmail' is clearly unfair and is just another one of the strange quirks in the Minor and Major League umpire relationship. You are RIGHT. It needs to be addressed.

WTF was up with F2. He hands the umpire the ball and then goes back into his crouch as he tries to hand him a new ball. I know he did it intentionally because he got tossed for it but I have never seen an exchange like that between an umpire and catcher.
