Heather Grey Pants...????

is it safe to get rid of the heather grey pants now, or should i hang on awhile? seems that the charcol color is taking over in a hurry. i've noticed a ton of the heather showing up on e-bay, and i'm thinking of selling a couple pair and hanging on to a couple just to have (just in case). i think our local area here in mid-carolina will probably allow either/or for this year, and go with the charcol for everybody in 2011.....

Those tons of heather gray "umpire" pants being sold by one guy are not really umpire pants. They are gray, and might be passable, but if you look at the actual listings they are from various (Levis, Haggar, etc.) makers. So don't thing the world is changing over night.

Call it as you see it - if your local is going with the darker color gray, then you already know what to do.

Of course, you'll be competing with all those other heather grays offered on Ebay, unless you can undercut their price.

Better yet, find a new guy that's just joining your local, and offer them for sale (or donate) to one of them. Sort of a pay it forward thing. That's what I did. :rollinglaugh:

Our HS Association has gone to Charcoal but I still get a lot of partners that only work youth ball have and use only Heather, so I have to keep mine around.

Heather gray has seemed to just ... fade away.

What a shame. When I went out on the field in my heathers with a powder blue shirt, I felt like ... well, I felt like I was 72 years old. I'll miss hearing stuff like, "Wow, he moves pretty well for such an old guy."

I guess we're just way behind down here. They have made it mandatory that we wear heather grey and ONLY heather grey when we call ball. I wish we could update and get some decent pants. Only problem, my association would lose a lot of members because all the older guys wouldn't swing for getting some new pants. I've seen some guys with faded walmart pants that have a couple holes in them! It's pathetic! And when you say something about it, the automatic response is, "I can't afford new gear. There's nothing wrong with these anyway!" Hell, I'm a college student paying my own bills AND tuition. If I can pay tuition and still afford to get new gear when it is needed, then so can these people working full time jobs! Oh well, I just wish we could move on to the charcoal!

What happened to that?

Buy a barrel clasp and some thread for it and re-string them.

High School across the the country is suppose to be Charcoal Grey this year, so I heard.

Youth leagues are not demanding either. I still wear Heather for those when that is all my partner has. When I am assigned UIC for a game, first question I ask partner when I call to set colors for a game is "Do you have Charcoal Grey" pants. If they are not working HS the answer is always no. The Association wouldn't care if they wore Heather and I wore Charcoal, but I want to match my partner, so I even had to get an additional pair recently.

I've kept 1 pair of base and 1 pair of plate pants in Heather.

I dont think I wore them once last season.... but in my HS association, you dont always know who your partner will be.......so I hung on to them so I can at least be uniform...

We have still have issues with some of our HS guys who think faded purple shirts and pink pants are acceptable....

one fellow umpire made the comment at our last meeting "if your equipment is older than the players you're umpiring, you might need to buy some new stuff". i think he was talking about high school age, but there's always that one person wanting to hang on....ha-ha-ha....

I worked a MSBL game with a guy who called me out in a LL game in 1969. He also called many of my son's PONY games over the years. He's a local fixture.

I'll describe him from head-to-Leather Lustered toe:

Faded formerly navy beanie (adjustable, of course)

Thick Harry Caray style glasses

Purple formerly navy shirt (dazzle material, of course)

Ribbed CP showing through the stretched-out "combo" shirt

Cracked leather belt

Heather purple combo slacks

Contrasting un-faded heather gray ball bags

Spot-Bilt shoes with that distinctive Leather Luster Kit finish

Formerly Wilson mask with a hideously stretched-out harness and (I swear) Leather Lustred cage bars (you know how that vinyl covering gets scraped off sometimes)

The fun is had when you bet yourself on how many plays he'll miss staring at his indicator after every pitch with his head tilted back so he can see it through his bifocals.
