I was wondering if anyone has a league that uses this live video feed. This company will install cameras on your field so people can subscribe to their service to watch games they cannot attend. I was thinking this might be bad news for umpires. I can see coaches recording their games and checking the umps calls. what are your thoughts on this? The reason I ask is because the league I work is thinking about this.

What's the concern? By rule, you cannot use video in your dugout, so if some pinheaded coach has that thinking, well maybe he'll find out about the rule after he buys the equipment.

Other than that, no big deal. Just get your calls right and what's the worry? :cheers:

I do games for a little league and girls softball progarm that use youthsportslive...the last thing in the world i would be concerned with/give a crap about is someone proving me wrong on a specific call....we all make mistakes and those of us that can't accept that have a hard time in our trade.....who do you think would come off looking worse...you, who does a good job out there and maybe missed one....or a-hole coach running around with his computer showing everyone at his 10 yr old daughters game

youth sports has been very well received in our league...they set up a table at on the weekends and they seem to sign up a lot of people - and the league, of course, gets a cut

I am not familar with this service. Can you capture the games from the feed? It could be an interesting teaching tool either for your group or just for yourself if you could.

Since it's a fixed camera, I doubt there's too much to worry about. From the example on the web page it looks like you will get a lot better look in person.

My first season I did a lot of LL major games and there was a guy that used to set up a camera right behind HP and film every game. At first it bothered me a little but after I gained a little confidence I would ask him how my zone looked and stuff like that. He always said it looked good to him. Also he said he could'nt see the bangers at the bases well enough to tell one way or the other.

I guess my point is that if it's a close play the footage won't be good enough to prove you wrong and if you kick one everyone is going to know it anyway.

Exactly. I had a guy in a Pony game that set up a camera right behind me and I asked to exchange info so I could get a copy of the game. I havent seen myself work a game on video in years and would kill for the chance. Sadly I never got a hold of the guy but I am hoping I can find someone up here that would do it.

As for worrying about some knucklehead coming back at me about ONE call that happened a week ago. Im no interested in talking about the past and if he wants to go on and on about it then so be it... he can do it from his car in the parking lot!

Oh, I forgot to do this as its something that I have been looking forward to doing for some time... woo hoo... well actually its now 505 posts but still.

I have had people video calls at bases from 15 ft away. If they want to argue, my answer is, if I was on that side maybe we could agree, from my side we aren't. It's not a big deal to disagree with a video. If they want to be totally stupid after a game about it, tell them to save it and some day when they are having a good day, pull it out and watch so it will piss them off all over again. We don't have the rule to allow video in our games so it doesn't make a difference what is on the tape.

Having a tape of a game is good for you, right or wrong you will learn something.

Well, right now youth sports live's quality isn't good enough to tell most things, especially balls and strikes. So for now it's not even close to something to worry about. Shouldn't be worried anyway.

Huge difference between a video tape of the game, and using said video to OVERTURN a call. I don't see the latter happening on the HS and lower level anytime soon.

That said, like Michael, I would see this as a great opportunity for any umpire. I've had many an occasion every season where I wish I could have a birds eye view of a banger or something else on the field. Newer guys would have the opportunity to see where they need the most work, and also review footage of how to handle situations as some of the more experienced guys in their group are able to, (or not! )

As to the "youth" side of it, I would welcome the opportunity for many of those involved in the youth side of the game to review their own behavior from the field or the stands. Even if I kicked a call, it's pretty good money that I'm not going to be the one acting out like a complete a$$ when the final editing is done. And if Skip wants to re-hash the miss from last weeks game, I would make sure he has the proper App on his I-Phone to watch the rest of this game from the parking lot.
