Guys critter brought up a question in another thread about appealing to your partner. I thought I'd create a little flow chars demonstrating how, when, why to appeal and what to do.

This is a work in progress and I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Warren from the Chart

“Coach, we discussed

the play and

we’re changing the call.”

IMO incorrect. WE're not changing the call I am changing MY call.

Example:

Pulled foot at first base. I intially rule out. Coach requests and is granted Time.

Coach: Pete can you get help

Me: ok skip

I call my partner (away from coaches / players) and say "Warren did he have the bag"

Warren says : "Pete he was CLEARLY off the bag".

Me: Ok

Me: I then Change the call because it was ME who made the call. We should not use the term we’re changing the call.

Now if the "other" coach requests and is granted TIME and says "what gives" Pete then I will simply say "Skip I checked with my partner and I am changing the call.

Remember the CALL still BELONGS to the umpire who made it and if a call is going to be changed then the Umpire who made the call should make the change NOT defer it to his partner.

That's nice work Warren.

It points out the importance of each umpire getting their own calls.

Excellent flow chart Warren. The getting away from coaches could be added to the block where they conference. Simply change the box that say,"Confers with partner" to"Confers with partner away rom coaches."

Warren perhaps I am being picky but at least for the first time or new umpires you should put in a phrase that says:

Make certian the coach requests and is granted Time before you entertain any questions from him. IMO, this is sometimes overlooked meaning you have a pulled foot scenario at first base and the coach is questioning you without being granted TIME.

Ok now to the Flow-Chart

Good job on the flow-chart, however, IMO I would change the wording concerning the following.

You say

"Sorry Coach that's my call and we're going to have to stick with it"

This year we had a mechanics clinic taught by the instructors at the Jim Evans facility in New Jersey.

This subject came up and even though they frown on umpires asking for help, the response recommended is as follows:

Assumption: pulled foot scenario at first base. The coach requests and is Granted TIME. He wants you to get help on a pulled foot.

Your response

"Skip I had him touching the bag"
NOT "Sorry Coach that's my call and we're going to have to stick with it"

By saying "skip I had him touching the bag" (whether the coach agrees with it or not) gives a more DIFINITIVE response as opposed to "Sorry Coach that's my call and we're going to have to stick with it" which means you are not definitive but it's your call.
