I just don't get what happened to Rap here. He didn't miss it as a banger - he signals that there was a pulled foot when clearly there wasn't one. Also, he took forever and made a week call. It's like he blacked out for a second or something. Also, the only reason that I can see him getting help is if he realized that he had no idea what happened. Really, really strange play.

I don't like Leland taking it as far as he did, but I can't blame him for getting pissed.

I don't have a problem Leyland coming out on the call, in fact, if he hadn't he wouldn't be doing his job. However you can come out, even be mad as hell, but all the demonstrating and continued crap is rediculous.

While I do agree it was over the top ...he WAS funny!

Embarassing would be a better description.

You were embarrassed? why? you didn't do anything? Ok, ...I'm done here, ...I just thought someone else may have thought it was funny ,regardless of whether it was necessary or not......

Regardless of how many times he got the hook this season, IMO this particular episode was extremely ratty. Like I said before, he knew they got the call right. The umpire made a bad call and looked horrible doing it so he decided that was a great oppurtunity to show him up.I don't think he was leaving until he got tossed, he knew they wasn't changing the call.

This!

Leyland was showing up the umpire because he still has a hangover from the Jim Joyce call. Yeah Ed R messed up but he went for help and got it right. Nuff said.

OK, please, everyone STOP bringing up the Jim Joyce episode,....it has NOTHING, ...I repeat, NOTHING to do with the Rapuano call,....NOTHING :Horse:

Sorry, not buyin' it.

In fairness to Leyland (this from a Twins fan), he was on the Dan Patrick show this morning and he was classy as hell. He repeatedly said Rap is a great umpire and said that he was embarrassed by his reaction. That said, he was adamant (and I don't disagree) that a judgment call should not be changed by asking for help.

Ok, I'll admit it, I laughed the first time when he demonstrated his mechanics on the call. I just can't keep laughing after I realized the RAT factor in this one. I'd give it a 7 on a 1-10 rat scale.

I agree 100% that the insistance for getting together needs to go out of style. Unfortunately it is a by-product of 25 yrs of politically correct crap. While I agree that umpires used to be too confrontational now we have to have a committee meeting about everything. To me, you have a safe/out at a base, that's your call, right or wrong. Unless there is a ball on the ground or a swipe tag another umpire may help you with, make the call and live with it. If Leyland is upset about a judgement call being overturned then he needs to go to the players union, the owners assoc and his fellow coaches and convince them of the error of their ways. PBUC and WUA are not the ones pushing the conference train.

It's just like anything else, they want it both ways. All you hear anymore is just get the call right no matter what. They are OK with that until a call gets changed and it goes against them, that's a different story.

I agree for the most part but in this case the umpire signalled a pulled foot which it can be argued is a case for a conference.

Really I think he did this to cover his ass... He didn't see it, singled safe, realized he couldn't make it right if he was just safe, signaled off the bag, asked the PU if he was out, PU said yea, he called BR out...

That's the way it seemed to me at least.

Yup...I think you're exactly right. He brain farted then covered himself with an excuse to go for help.

If he didn't see it (which I think is pretty obvious), why didn't he signal "time", then go to the PU, ask, signal out.... You'd still get an argument, but it looks a lot better when you spare John Farrell coming out... Tell Leyland you didn't see it and wanted to get it right.... He still might go on a rant, but at least then it looks like "Yes, I made a mistake, I just wanted to make the right call was made", instead of "I thought he was safe, but it was corrected by my plate ump"...

If your plate ump tells you he didn't see it or it was too close, call him safe and that you were checking a pulled foot.... It looks awful, but the same thing wouldv'e happened had the PU with Rappuano hadn't seen it.

Yep...either that or he's a complete tool for going off the way he did and showing up the umpire.

I've kept an eye on your comments on this one. You are "right on" IMHO.

Here is a quote from Leyland the day after.

After declining to talk about the play Monday, Leyland brought it up at his pregame news conference Tuesday.

"Ever since I've been here, I normally don't discuss the umpires in the newspaper," he said. "If I do talk, we're apt to be fined $10,000 to $25,000. That's not like getting thrown out of a game and paying $1,000 or $2,500.

Leyland was making $$ 2,000,000 before his 2 year contract extension was granted in 2009-2011. $1,000-2,500 per ejection is chicken-sh$t money. There is no incentive not to get run as long as you don't talk about it in the paper. $1,000-$2,500 to get your moneys worth is pure Bullsh$t when you make over 2 mil. Bunch of crybabies and those other 13 words you can't say on TV or in print.

And I believe I have read that the teams will usually pick up the tab of league fines. I don't recall whether it wa referring to just players or all "employees".
