Hi,

I wouldn't call myself a new ump yet since I haven't even hit the field as an ump. Right now I am tryign to take in as much information as I can. It is amazing you can play a game for so long and know the basic rules, but not all of them. Who knew (besides all of you) that if a ball hits the pitching mound and goes out of play its a foul ball?

Right now I'm a player, and hopefully soon be both a player and an ump. I play in the Rochester NABA league and am the Bulldogs catcher (bulldog-baseball.com). It was interesting to read the threads about framing pitches and working with catchers. I will throw out one thing pertaining to that. Realize the catcher is often between a rock and a hard place. I guess teh ump would be the hard place and the pitcher is the rock. If I don't hold close pitches or frame them really well, the 'rock' will be coming down on me. So it can be tough catching, because you don't want to show up the ump, but you also have to work hard for your pitcher. After all, you might only see the ump once that year, you will see that pitcher all year long.

My first question that I would like to try and get answered is. Can anyone direct me to an online PDF, or hard copy of what I think is called a 'case' book? I have an official MLB rule book right here, but as with anything, it is often nice to read situations and what the ruling was, and why. Which is what I assume a case book is. Any other good book or video references would be nice as well. Especially 2 man mechanics.

You're not going to be able to find a legal PDF ot the MLBUM, but you can sometimes find them on EBay. Also look into the Jaska/Roder manual (www.rulesofbaseball.com) both the Wendelstedt School & JEAPU sell their own manuals.

Thanks! That website and manual looks like a must have. Also, just out of curiosity, have you ever run across an ump down in that area named Patrick Crain? He was an old Navy buddy who was living in Charleston, SC last I knew. He apparently got into umping and last I knew was up to college level. If you see him, tell him I said hi.

Yup! There are definitely some things I already know I need to learn. Balk being one! Infield fly rule, dropped third strike are others. Shoot I didn't even know till last year that if a guy is stealing and its a foul tip and I catch it, I still have to try and throw the runner out. I was like 'Hey, doesn't he have to go back?'. The ump said 'nope, you caught it!'. LOL Although still might be a bit confused about the hit hand thing. Last week in a game we had a batter against us try to bunt. It was hi and tight and I think he was trying to pull the bat back, but it hit his hand. After the guy yelled and screamed for 5 minutes about us throwing at him, he yelled for another 5 minutes when the ump told him to get back in the box and it was a strike. Or I guess if he was hurt they could have put in another player, but it was still a strike.

Thanks! Yup, that is who I am working with, the RDUA. Chuck Healy is the manager of one of our rivals in the NABA and is also the head guy for RDUA ump here.

Sorry Casey don't know him. But I'm still a far cry from Charleston. You mentioned Navy & Charleston by any chance are you or him submariners?

LOL!!! we "skimmer-pukes" call submariners "bubble-heads" LOL!!!!

I roomed with a couple submariners at sonar school back in the day - they know how to party!
