  1. I watched a program on sports science the other day about performance sports wear for the heat. DO NOT WEAR CLOTHING THAT PULLS SWEAT AWAY FROM YOUR BODY!!!!! This works against the bodys natural cooling system. Your body will now use all your energy to cool your body. I forget the name of the clothing line is like armor x or something. What they did for the experiment was put a treadmill in a room with heat lamps and the temp was 125f. The host swollowed a temp sensor to get the core body temp. In less than 20 min he collapsed and his internal body temp was 104f.. Then the take this special clothing and get a guy that runs extreeme triatholons he was in there for like an hour, and his core temp didn't break 99 (f). Then the host did it again and his temp didn't break 99 (f) I will try to find it when I get home and post a link
  2. Hahah, this is funny, well to me any way, but every thing I do I relate to my martial arts (kenpo) training. The scissors stance is almost like a closed kneel stance. The way I started out, I was in like a modified horse stance. Now after observing the pro and college umps, I have noticed I have always set up in the "slot". I now use a left neutral bow for right hand batters and a right neutral bow for left handed batters. A neutral bow is what we kenpoists call a fighting stance. Now keep in mind I do not put my hand "on guard" I just use the foot work part of the stance Wonder if that will confuse anyone??? Lol
  3. This may seem like a stupid question, but I have not worked on the 90' field yet. What is the difference between a balk and an improper disenganement?? What is the penalty for improper disengagement?
  4. Out here, from what I hear, is HS varsity you make $80 a game. I do not do HS (yet) so this is just hear say. But we make the same as what you posted for LL majors Hope that helps some what :banghead:
  5. Shoulda tossed him for running and yelling at the same time!! " Coach, you know its against the rules for the coach to do two things at once!" (Running and yelling). Rofl
  6. Get a hockey referee gurdle or modify some shorts to hold football thigh pads in spots you feel should be protected ;)
  7. Wow she is lucky that the ump wasn't trained to defend himself. I don't care if you are male or female, you attack me you get hurt or KTFO!!! Mr. Parker said it best " I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6" ;)
  8. I agree there needs to be a system for getting coaches, but I don't really think it would cost much money. In USA hockey, the coaches HAVE to attend a MANDITORY clinic on coaching, and be certified every year and carry that card with them on the bench. I wish LL would implement something like that. It would be good for the game. I was doing a LL majors game and the kid pitching was probably between 9-10. First batter he throws a knuckle ball in for a strike!!! Now this knuckle ball did not spin at all!!!! Not much movement, but that will come with arm strength. Second pitch, is a knuckle ball for a ball high!! The coach yells, "knock that off and throw the ball!!" A few innings later I talk to the coach and say "coach, don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to tell you how to coach, but, why discourage your pitcher from throwing and developing that knuckle ball, he threw it for a strike!!" "Oh, we don't work on it" he says I think to myself, self, that kid definitely works on it. The coach and I agreed that we would rather see kids at this level working on knuckle balls, cutters, and change ups over curve balls or any other strenuous breaking balls that can damage a young kids arm.
  9. I found this post on "Helping a Pitcher?" interesting and have nominated it accordingly for "Post Of The Month June, 2009"
  10. verry cool! I train in the full parker system 24 techniques per belt, all sets and forms:) its a nother passion of mine and gives me a little confidence leaving the field after a game:BD: if your boys are still intrested in the art, tell'em to check out www.kenpotalk.com one of the many chat forums I belong to. lol end of plug:rolleyes:
  11. thats cool.. I would like to try to ump a game with ya I do games for cranston american right now. Im always looking to spend more time on the field.. I live in woonsocket, but work in warwick. if ya need any one for the little league.. i can shoot ya a pm with my phone number and info.. I have only done LL baseball for the past two years... i do want to get involved in higher level's of baseball.. I did ice hockey for 3 years, if that counts for anything..
  12. yes im a kenpoist and a 2nd black working on 3rd.. how old are your sons? what system do they study?
  13. If it is not a travel league, help them out, if they travel, this is a touchy subject and I would stay away. Our little league association's president wants us to help the players out (they don't travel during the season and there where 4 teams this year) so I helped the catchers out on throwing mechanics, and tell pitchers how to make their motion more economicl, but I do this for both teams on the field and each team in our association. Don't do it for travel teams tho Any thoughts about kids this age throwing curve balls?? I personally feel they don't have the developed arm strength to throw curve balls under age 16 or older. Just my opinion They should worry about that more than pitch counts at anything under 16-18?? Just my opinion
  14. family guy fan??? lol that is a shell fish similar to a clam that is verry common in RI :smachhead:
  15. New game, come in with a clean slate. And just do what you do. I feel if you go into the game with any other mind set you will almost be looking to throw the guy out. Just my $.02 :smachhead:
  16. Welcome!! Good to see we have a good presence here on the boards while being the smallest "state" (USA ). If you would be willing I would love to get together so I could pick your brain about the info you learned. I can show you some Parker Kenpo in return.
  17. I just purchased the macgregor cp used from a 71 year old guy that is no longer umpiring, and he said he was doing HS varsity and leagon ball with it. I'm only at the LL level and it definitely works for that, and I would be comfortable with it to HS, maybe modify it a little in the sternum area with some hard shell from football or hockey shoulder pads, but I like it and it was worth the price. $70 for the CP, two masks, shin pads, and a bunch of ball bags indicators and brushes. Altho I like my catchers shin pads and hockey style helmet that I had before I even started to umpire. Too bade they are lite blue in color (they do refer to us as "blue" don't they?) And the shin pads are triple knee protection, but they are comfortable when I have to run around working a game by my self, and the league is ok with me wearing them :smachhead:
  18. poll is closed i just had to chime in because of me being a fan and all, and to give some insight into my mlb preferences plus I just joined a few days ago:yippie:
  19. I have been a Phillies fan my whole life (28 years) and didnt get to see the 1980 season (first hand):yippie:
  20. :P girly town, and the games always start late. So the train them young for being late. Lol I did a minors game the other day, bases loaded with 1out. Pop up hit to the third base side, I call "infield fly, batters out", well the ball hits the ground (no catch) kids take off running and R3 scores. Coach comes out and says "they can't advance or score on an infield fly". My reply, "yes they can" he tries to argue, and I ask " are you the manager?". Coach replies" no" and walks back to the dugout. Hahahahah Next half inning that coach is coaching first base. A batter reaches 1st on a little blooper to right, fielder throws ball to first and over throws, coach now taps player on shoulder and tells him to go to 2nd ( I did not call the runner out on coaches interference) After that half of the inning I say " coach, you know I could have called the runner out on interference by you?" "No, I didn't even know that was in the rules". WTF! You are going to argue infield fly rule, when you don't even know the rules????? Hahahahahaha
  21. Great reminder!!! Tho I have to say I'm glad I have started in little league, because you never know what them little buggers are going to do with the ball, and you se just about every situation (except balks) at this level . Just one persons opinion :P
  22. I work in warwick if that counts for anything. Lol 30 min of driving doesn't bother me too much. But I have observed most Rhode Islanders don't like to drive more than 15 min to get somewhere. Lol
  23. I live in woonsocket, an umpire for Cranston American Little league for now. I'd be willing to work games anywhere north of warwick. Its a lot of fun and I enjoy it quite a bit. I plan on getting re-certified through USA hockey to do Ice hockey for the winter months :smachhead:
  24. Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Well, what ever the process is to get into doing higher level of play, I'm game. Lol. I just enjoy being on the field :tantrum:
  25. Hello all! Just found the forum last night. This is my second year umping little league here in RI. I plan to get certified to do high school and other leagues for next year. I reffed ice hockey for a few years in early 2000's and am looking to get back into that as well. Look forward to reading the info and insight this site has to offer!
