  1. I'm a member of three groups on Arbiter. If I have a game scheduled with one group, is there a way that I can show that I'm available for a different group still. (I.e. I have a HS game but want to show as available for my college group). Have had a lot of rain-outs (big surprise) and want to be able to pick them up and cancel out the HS game if I could.
  2. That has the batter hitting th ball. I'm talking about batter hitting the mitt so the catcher can't catch it or knocks it loose from the mitt. Any difference? NCAA rule is 6-2-d d. If a batter swings and misses a pitch and the backswing is so forceful that it hits the catcher as the pitch is caught, or if the batter hits the ball again, the pitch shall be called a strike, the ball is dead (no interference) and no runner shall advance Obr 6.06c (comment). If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings so hard he carries the bat all the way around and, in the umpire’s judgment, unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball in back of him on the backswing before the catcher has securely held the ball, it shall be called a strike only (not interference). The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall advance on the play. Am I to understand that for Fed ball this isn't a strike, dead ball, send runners back like in the other two codes?
  3. We were having a brief discussion about backswing interference ("swings so forcefully...catcher can't catch the pitch") during our local meeting last evening. Tried looking in the book for the rule when a question was posed, but couldn't find it. Anyone have it tagged/dog-eared for easy reference?
  4. Makes absolute sense. I've always looked at base shoes that have a white logo but black sole as more "footbally" (same with the reebok field mags). If it had a white sole it would be argued that there's way to much white (see: Reebok zip plate shoes). Also they would then start to look like the already in exisistance diamond trainers. To be a baseball shoes. Sandwich a strip of white between upper and sole.
  5. I'm a NCAA hockey athletic trainer/equipment manager in my "real" job. The protector you linked to is designed more as a way to protect against a skate blade coming into contact with the neck and doing serious damage to the blood vessels running to the brain. The goal is to avoid a Clint Malarchuk incident (be warned, graphic http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=icJgO6j1y_E ). The are made of soft non-protective foam and then a layer or two of Kevlar type material to prevent the cut of the blade. You may be better off with a goalie collar which if you get a good quality one will have some high density foam (think Honigs K1) that also stretches down the sternum and also out into the clavicle. Overkill but an idea: http://www.goaliemonkey.com/reebok-goalie-neck-collar-tc-pro-sr.html http://www.goaliemonkey.com/reebok-goalie-neck-collar-2012-sr.html Another idea is to go with a lexan collar which is pretty much an oversized dangler that goalies wear and Cederstrom also wore for a bit. http://www.goaliemonkey.com/bauer-goalie-neck-guard-n17.html Hope this information helps and you can find a solution so you can continue to ump safely.
  6. Runner on third only. Ground ball in infield to F5,F6. What does U3 do? My thoughts are hang at third for the possible play on a wandering R3 then as fielder releases throw to first to retire B/R then bust inside. If an accurate throw is released then I would say hang a little more towards third for a snap throw back. If offline head more towards second for advancing B/R. Or is it you hang at third the whole way and if there's an overthrow then U1 would trail B/R to second like in a two-man. Thanks for your help
  7. Unless Fitts has other info other then the picture or there is a different model of platinum then I go with the Power side. The platinum has one solid piece across the front and wrapping up over the shoulder unlike the gold, charcoal, and power where there is a gap. I also don't see the stitch marks/holes from where the little pad is removed
  8. I'm thinking black wind shirt over whatever. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/yanks-o-alds-game-2-loss-birds-gallery-1.1178021?pmSlide=11 Slide 12 of 17 shows a semi-front shot. All the plate images that I saw on google you could see a grey hard shell (Power probably) sticking out from the collar.
  9. Call Wilson and get a replacement. I'm under the impression they have a 1 yr warranty. I dented 3 of them and replaced each time.
  10. F4/6 foot was on the bag. Maybe he thought that he blocked bag with the foot? Three interesting plays from end of Florida/NC state game 2. Play #1: top 8(?) throw in from outfield retired a Florida runner with a tag possibly in the back but tag might of been missed as well Play #2: NC State wanted interference on a fake throw from catcher to 2nd and then a fake to 3rd Play #3: rundown between 1st and 2nd to end top of the 10th. Contact made between runner and F6 while F3 had the ball
  11. Question about the Douglas: how are the knee sections attached/formed? Are they like the Wilson triple knees and attached with Velcro? My biggest issue with the Wilson set is that my knee sections come un-Velcroed at times and kinda flop/float around. Thanks for any info.
  12. Nike Air Max + 2012 Expensive, but good. Agree with these shoes. I bought the 2011 last year and absolutely loved them. In February I lucked out as I went to the Nike outlet store. They had the 2010 model (just as good and as comfortable) for $70 + 30% off, originally they sell for $160. Want to buy several pairs but only 1 in my size. I also like the Nike trail winds as well. In my opinion anything with the air max bladder is a good choice.
  13. As far as where to crease, i split the vent holes and arc it down towards the middle seam on both sides. I've seen some above and some below in relation to the vent holes. I also then go maybe about a half an inch above the sweatband in the back and then crease and pull to the front crease (middle 1/3rd of the hat then folds under). That gives me a pretty nice look in my opinion. This is how I do it. First I roughly align my creases. When I have them how I like them I use bag clips to hold them in place. I prefer using the ones from Le Gourmet Chef. They are like 2 inches long, have a lot of "grasping" pressure and really help set and maintain the crease, and they're like $.99 a piece. I take one side and using a Steam buddy with the press attachment. I put the crease between the press, blow some steam through it and then move all along the crease. As I move along I replace the bag clips while its still warm to help set the crease (plastic backing will be warm and soft, it'll set in place as it cools) I set the back crease as well then fold up and clip everything in place and let it set to cool. Once I crease as hat this way I never have to repeat again and just use the bag clips following the games. Not saying this is the best way, just the way I do it and it works pretty well for me.
  14. I have a question in regards to a video play that I had in which the batter hits a little humpback fly ball to F3. F3 then catches the ball off his shoelaces then runs over and touches first base. The answers were something like, a) get a better angle, b)have better timing, wait for voluntary and intentional release, c) excellent play to take from foul ground, d) both A+C Correct answer was "B" with the explanation following as 2012 CCA Manual I can't find my 2012 Manual, it disappeared to somewhere. Did infield fly ball coverage change in any # umpire system? If F3 is coming forward to catch a fly ball, the HPU has that call according to my 2011 Manual (and any other one that I've seen) In the video they show the HPU bust out trailing the runner and then they change the camera shot and the HPU is never shown. Towards the end of the play, U1 saunters out and gives a lazy hammer, while F3 retreats towards the bag. My take is that this should be "D" in which the HPU should get a better angle “Aâ€, which in this case would be to tail off into foul territory “Câ€, as to not get straight lined. The "correct" answer of "B" is in regards to U1 (only umpire that is shown giving a mechanic involving timing) who, unless a change has been made, mechanically should not be involved. Thoughts?

  17. I bought the standard profile in sept. of '08. wore it through fall ball (college and hs) and completely loved it. First college game in the spring, fastball, batter swung, nicked it a little drilled me right in the lower vertical support bar. Dented it in towards my face. Sent that back, got a replacement. Month later, HS ball fouled into the right ear wing, dented it. Two masks, two fouls, two dent. Both replaced for free each time with no hassle or haggle. These also are just minor dents, both very noticeable, but probably didn't increase future injury But as long as the thing dents under warranty, I'll take a free one to replace it. Love the weight, the visibility, every thing about it, other then the denting. I swapped the pads out after a few wears to the old west vest vinyl/calfskins that I had (more squared version) and this winter looking to replace those with the honigs version. I also will swap in a pair of traditional all tan doeskin wilson's
  18. Just want to offer my similar story to the dress pants We had a guy work a Jr. Legion all-star game (in a MiLB stadium) wear a suit pair of grey dress pants that had a tanish plaid check in them with a dress belt, and his shoes were black sketchers boots with the brown sole. What a goof. This also isn't a one time thing, these are his normal pants, etc. This guy also thinks he one of the best even though he's a first year guy that barely works JV ball in an association that has many college level umps and HS umps that have worked state championships. Don't be a fool, wear the proper pants. Dress grey pants are very light compared to even the heather grey. They won't match and you'll be able to tell.
  19. In the Men's league that I work: If the manager is an infielder, F2 included, then they are permitted to go to the mound and visit the pitcher, as long as it is brief and terminated when directed by the umpire. It can turn into a charge conference if it goes beyond a reasonable amount of time. If the manager is in the outfield, its a charged conference It difficult with the manager being F2 though becuase F2 usually will have an pretty healthy discussion with the pitcher. I would say best judgement. If the catcher jogs out to the pitcher and has a brief discussion (you'll know what Im talking about, how we pitching this guy, bear down, etc.) then no trip. If the whole infield is coming in and we're having a meeting, charge them. My advice is that its a feel/judgement thing.
  20. Northwest PA- I lost 9 out of 12 dates to start the year with rain and snow, but have got most of them in last week, minus a day due to rain. My assignor/chapter lost 66 games from a Wed. to Wed. due to rain. Each now has to get made up on top of all the ones that were already lost. Ive had make-ups get pushed back due to the need to fulfill another make-up from earlier in the season. It was a big mess as things were going on, and Im getting a call every night to fill in holes.
