  1. A few years ago Illinois went nuts on this. It seems that a track meet was going on and a young man was struck and killed by lightning. The storm was 30 miles away! So the IHSA was enforcing this rule hard! I followed it pretty closely but played a few games that I probably shouldn't have! One day I umpired a Softball game in a town where I deer hunted. I had two stands that I needed out of the trees. So I went to the far side of the timber and got the first. I returned to the closest to the truck stand. I had it on the ground gathering up all my stuff when I heard distant thunder. I thought, do I want to leave them, or do I want to drive 50 miles back? Gas was high then! I grabbed them and headed out! I no sooner got to the edge of the woods, I heard a boom, saw a flash, and smelled dirt! I tossed the stands in the timber and ran to the truck! This is why I don't take the chance!!
  2. Our big ole snapping turtle just barely delayed our game! A coach ran out, grabbed by the tail, and took it to the fence. He let him go on the other side, and we played ball!
  3. As a former military postal worker, he will be able to use the Army Post Office system. It is based on rates that we use in the normal system. It is just like us sending stuff! Just make a trip to the post office. The people in Korea are mailing the crap out things this way! We ran many mobile PO's during Desert Shield and Storm. I happen to have been the one that kept the records for one of the major divisions. We processed just over 16 million pounds of mail in about 6 months. Hell, I mailed most of my military stuff home so I didn't have to carry it!
  4. Last summer while working games in 100 degree temps, the rubberized waistband of my pants applied itself to my shirt! I used some stuff called Krud Cutter to clean it off.
  5. Those cold days are the days that you put a 1 run rule into play!
  6. I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago! I showed up for a game to find out that we were completing a rain shortened game. The home team was getting beat pretty badly and we had rain coming again! I had worked for this coach for several years and got along with him well! At the pre-game the coach said "Open your strike zone up and let's get this over with!" Knowing the coach as I did, I said, "Swing or I'll swing for you?" He said, "Exactly!" We played the game and the home team got beat on a 10 run rule. But as the last batter swings at his second horrible pitch, he turns to me and says, "Your f***ing horrible!" Shocked, I asked what he said? He lied to me! But the coach was there and he had heard it! He then repeated what he said! The coach told him to get in the dugout! The next game was post season for the school. I told the coach that could eject the player. He was good with that! Him being the old school coach that he is, I asked if he wanted to handle it? He told me very much so! So I let him! But the player did come back out and apologize!
