An observation from a youth couch - we played a 51/75' 11U game yesterday, I was 1BC, final score 9-8 in 5 innings - so A LOT of base runners. A lot of throws over to first and I payed particular attention to both teams requesting time on pick offs at the bases. My guess, there were at least 30 throws to a base during the game, not once did a player ask for time that I can recall. Our team we never coached the kids to ask for time, we taught them to "climb the ladder" as it's been described here. Heck my son dove back in to the base on on PO attempt and he got up and looked like he had been dunked in a dirt tank.... his mom loved that ;-), even then no time requested. I agree with what most have stated there is no need for time in these situation.

what indicates to you that he starts toward home? my layman's eye does not pick up on any move of this body toward home.

Layman's interpretation - Doesn't a base hit count as "any other play" and therefor the rule becomes applicable?

was it the lack of step towards first that causes the call of Balk?

So does the security guard picking up the ball cause a dead ball situation and negate the runners not touching up on advancing?

The question is did he get the call right. Either it was interference or it wasn't. If is was batter should be called out and runner goes back as I understand it. that's my thinking as well. Thank you gentlemen.

Fed Rules 11u - 75' bases - two man crew. 1- R2 takes off for third, C double clutches throw as Batter is in his way, makes late throw, runner ruled safe by BU. PU sends runner back. Explanation is batter had no intent to interfere and catcher delayed making play, judgement call. I think he got it wrong, if it's interference then runner goes back and batter is out as I understand it. 2 - BB and BR runs to first, slaps coach's hand, runner takes hard turn to second (R3 - attempt to draw throw) and PU calls dead ball based on hand slap. Says no touching is allowed? When asked to clarify (vs. assistance rule) he says it's not in the book.....????? Thanks for the comments.

well since the zone can be adjusted it could be set a bit wider. However, as I'm sure you know, you coach the kids to swing at balls in the zone, then you get the guy who calls balls 6" off the plate (that cannot be hit without lunging at) or at the ankles a strike, well then it makes the game a wee bit harder. I can understand if you get a team who doesn't take the bat off the shoulder, however, you get a kid who pitches' are in the zone, well then it is a different story.

1/4" is a very small MoE. why would that sinker not be a called strike, it would seem by rule that it should be, \/ from OBR

Thank you - I did not realize that MLB Umpires were that consistent or close with the MoE. From the youth ball experience I've had of the last few years this system would be a god send... I agree about the traditional nature as stated in my first comment. appreciate the comment UJ.

typically I'm a traditionalist when it comes to the game. I like the fact that umpires have their own zones. It seems some calls are lost or gained by where the HU sets up and how the catcher receives the ball. I can see how this could benefit the game by creating a more consistent zone across the game. Jeff - I'm not a umpire - so I cannot speak from that view point. What's your apparent objection to this system?

Agreed, the Seattle players did not notice the missed touch, the bench or video guy did, then the appeal was made.

can you explain why to a n00b please ? So it's worth losing your job and probably going to jail for some salvia? That sets a good example for the players, parents and public to respect the position. You know there would a spectator that would get it on video, post it to the web, go viral and you would have more trouble than you ever bargain for. Not saying your action would not be justified in my view, however, this is the world we live in.

the way I see it, he started down the line, then reacts to the foul call and stops. Where to place him is a great question. I would think 1st, because if called fair, the fielder was in position to get the ball in to second and prevent Castro from getting to 2nd.
