That is were i got started .. I worked USSSA for yrs, then moved to baseball.. then college.. I honestly think I couldn't umpire a Softball game.. 1st time a guy would yell about a pitch being called a strike , I would say " hey it's pitched underhand for a reason, hit it".. then Im sure there will be an ejection.

So Dave.. 3 for 3 man and 2 for 3 man huh..LOL

this is why the PU should always say/yell Ball 4.. so his partner/s can hear and not call any runners out.

If you as the BU are watching the ball ( correct mechanic) you should be able to see if your partner called a ball or strike... then there is no need to call this.. But it happens.. So if you call the runner out and it was a ball, to which makes it ball 4.. call time and put the runner back on 2nd... easy fix.

And please tell me what Clinic you "overheard this at" and what was that guys training? and who taught him?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT EVER DO THIS IN A GAME... EVER... NOT NEXT WEEK NOT NEXT YEAR. Who ever told you this needs to attend the Midamerican umpire clinic to be taught the right way. Om my gosh, my blood pressure is going through the roof.

And the more i think about I'm not sure I like you sharing these videos.. i mean I pay my $125 to see these 1st hand. But if someone is on here sharing them, why do we need to pay to see these?

I went to the camp in New Orleans 2 yrs ago. It was good, but geared for newer guys who are trying to decide if becoming an umpire is the way to go. They ( MLB) do give out full ride scholarships to attend one of the 5 week umpire schools.

you better becareful posting these are on here... those are for paid members.. Like myself. NCAA has rights and you can/could get in trouble.

Actually the competition at the college umpire level in our area is pretty intense with some very good umpires. First impressions are lasting impressions. But a one? I have heard about how tough the college groups are in Cali.... but you can not hind a good umpire....

This isn't just directed to you, but to everyone...Why do you need to pack 4 shirts? I understand 4+ game tournaments, but if you're working a DH, do you really need 4 shirts? Can't you contact your partner in advance and determine what the flavor of the day will be and only pack what you need? I know I only work at the college level, but even at the HS level and lower someone needs to be the crew chief. Contact your partner in advance (at the college level the CC does this on Monday for a weekend series) and decide what you're going to wear and all the other particulars. I've beat this dead horse before, but also, why do you need to pack 2 chest protectors? Or 2 of anything besides ball bags??? I just don't get it. If you feel the need to have "back up" equipment with you, why not just put it in a duffle bag and keep it in your trunk? You're still climbing the ladder and having figured out yet that only you and your partner really care about a wrinkle in your shirt or a fold in your pants. Yes, we want to look professional, but if a college coach says our stuff is wrinkled after driving or flying with our gear packed, they will be promptly told to provide us with an iron and ironing board. Most D-1's provide laundry service for the weekend. If our clothes come back from them wrinkled, it's on them. As I wrote earlier...No one will remember that your pants had wrinkles, but they are going to remember the calls you miss. Guys, let's all understand we're talking about our pants or jerseys having fold lines in them where whey been folded in our bags. We're not talking a wrinkled up mess that looks like they've sat in the bottom of a gear back for 3 weeks, pulled out, shook out and thrown on. I appreciate you wanting to have professional looking creased/starched pants, but my pants that have been in my gear bag for 6-7 hours (or longer) aren't going to look any worse than yours if you've hung them in your car or garment bag. I've had guys put their stuff in a garment bag, fall off the hanger and get completely wrinkled up in the bottom of the bag. Something I say all the time, if you think that anyone focuses on you, the next time a batter is out by 30 feet at 1st base for the 3rd out, don't make a call and watch what happens. The defense will leave the field, the offense will take the field and the game will move on. Or, ask the coaches at the plate meeting during the 2nd game of a DH what color uniforms you wore during the last game. Unless they're OCD, they aren't going to remember. I agree with what you are saying. I don't think the coaches care unless we look like we slept in our clothes the night before. But it's not them I have to worry about. It is the Evaluator in the stands watching my game. My first year doing High School Varsity Baseball, in my first game I had an evaluator at the game. His first comment to me after the game was that my pants didn't have a noticeable crease in them. I asked him what that meant(I could see the crease). He said from the stands my crease should stand out. I just said ok. But from that point on I decided I would never let that happen again. Especially since he gave me a 1 for my uniform that day. But that's what we have to deal with when we are moving up the ladder in High School or junior College baseball. Please tell your little ole High school evaluator to contact me...and i will fix him... at the high school level most of those guys dont really know what they are looking for. Case in point. My varsity football crew go evaluated and the guy gave us a average on uniform...but all of our stuff was clean and looked great... stupid ass high school people.

4 shirts for 1 game?... what are you worried about?... I only pack according to my schedule..in the early spring, I know 100% we are not wearing powder blue, so there is no need to pack that one. In the spring i will pack 1 black, 1 powder. I also look at the weather, so i might need 2 types of jackets.. light pullover and a heavy jacket.

Try to switch... put your clothes on the bottom folded... and all your gear up top... the firmness of the bottom of the bag will provide a barrier for your clothes.

As a vet myself, I cant stand wrinkled pants....But their is a difference between wrinkles and creases... i'm fortunate enough to fly to 5 if not a few more d1 weekends... when you fly you can't hang your pants. Fold them in 3 or 4 folds, then it is just a crease and not a wrinkle. I can see a guys pants and see a crease and be cool.. but wrinkles will bother me.

Communicate.. no matter where the ball is hit.. the PU WILL STILL TELL HIS BU THAT " I'VE GOT 3RD IF HE COMES".. then when he( the runner is coming).. the PU will then say.." I've got 3rd, I've got 3rd" Done.. end of story.

Man this stuff happens in regular season games.. dont get angry, be professional about. It is a mistake. He just wants you to know that the school is not trying to screw you over.

I would agree with @Matt - what part of the Midwest? Overall I think the Midwest is maybe a little more "welcoming" than other parts of the country when it comes to quality umpires moving into the area...based on stories I've heard from quality guys with good resumes having moved from the Midwest to either coast. When you move you are going to have to do several things... 1. A resume with good references. Les Wrinkles - the local dry cleaner who also assigns the hometown league isn't one of them. You want people who are known across the country, conference supervisors, etc. 2. Like it or not you're going to have to go to a clinic or something to be seen. Even a good resume with reputable guys who vouch for you will only go so far. You're going to have to prove you can do it. 3. In most areas you aren't going to immediately pick up your career where it left off in your old area. Again, the Midwest is probably more willing to place someone at the same level, but seniority and reputation have to be earned. Coaches won't know you and neither will your partners. The best advice I would give anyone moving from one area to another is to sit back and study. Get to know the umpires, how they umpire, how they enforce things, how they handle situations, how they handle people. Too many guys come in on their high horse and want to show everyone "how things are done where I come from." Well...that's where you came from, not here. I don't mean to piss anyone off with these stereotypical comments because a lot of it has to do with how coaches/teams behave in various areas, too...From what I've seen, east coast umpires are more "by the book" and put up with less crap. West coast guys are more laid back, but have maybe a cocky/know it all mentality. Guys in the Midwest tend to be laid back, easy to get along with (from the "Northern Nice" they get a little more red ass moving south), maybe call things less by the book and more with common sense. There are always exceptions to the rule, but these are things I've observed. If someone moves into a new area and tries to do things "their way", they won't be as successful as those who try to go with the flow. This is good info JB... i would like to bet no one moves around more than my family ( we are a military family) we move about every 2-3 yrs... so I'm pretty familiar with moving around.

Please for the love of god make this a pregame talk.. " hey if we have to get together we will do ...x..y..z.." you have no idea how much this can help you in a game.. last season i had a D1 game in Midamump's area with a very big D1 school, we had pregames that if we needed help on anything crazy we would talk..we had a possible hit by pitch SIT.. I didnt see it or hear it, batter thought he got hit, so i stepped out from behind HP, asked down to the U1 if he had anything, he said 'NO".. head coach came out to talk... i told him i had nothing and you even saw me ask my base umpire, he has nothing either. coach was well... ok then. Talk about handling dugouts, bench jockeying, rundowns.. all this might seem like it's boring, but trust me, it will help.
