  1. The ball that was called foul down the left field line in the 11th inning of game 1 of the Yankees v Twins 2009 ALDS. They had a 6 man crew, 2 guys down the foul lines, and the left field ump, Phil Cuzzi, called it foul even though it clearly hit the glove of the left fielder 4-5 ft into fair territory, bounced in fair, and went over the wall. Twins would've scored a run. The Yankees won in extras.
  2. I was refering to play of the yr. in MLB. This was a fluke injury, I don't think he realized that instant that his playing days might be over. Nice story to tell the grandkids one day.
  3. Also, don't forget to discuss courtesy runners. Make sure both HC's know the rule and agree to let either the catcher/pitcher, only the catcher or pitcher be run for. Is it allowed at any point or just with 2 outs? Make sure you get both to agree, this will avoid arguments later.
  4. When does your season start and end? Do you guys work games all year in Souther Cal? We go from late March through early June (playoffs) for HS, mid April through mid August for youth and Sept. and Oct for fall ball. Adult goes through October too. We get many rain/snow outs in October, March and April.
  5. Check out the play of the year in all of Baseball. You won't see this in a High School game. Talk about a web gem. GO GO WHITE SOX!!! Link Below. http://espn.go.com/chicago/video/clip?id=5058253&categoryid=3775716
  6. Add another 1 to the list. Expecting more rain tonight, this sucks. Haven't worked a game in 8 days. 8 - Worked 6 - Rainouts 1 - Tomorrow (Probable)
  7. This sucks. I thought last year was just one of those years where the weather was worse than most springs. The 1st two weeks this year were great. 9 games scheduled, only one rained out. In the last 6 days, I had 4 games scheduled, 4 rained out. A big storm just hit our area, big hail, there's no way I'll be doing a game tomorrow. I'm getting restless guys. 8 umped, 5 rainouts. How many games have you had rainedout?
  8. Actually the game was in a southwest suburb of Chicago. Won't name the schools cause it wouldn't be fair (especially for any Chicagoland observer). Aside from that, the same coach told me I should've warned his pitcher (righ-hander), rather than call a balk with a runner on 3rd. He did not come to a dicernable stop. Just took the ball in the set position and went straight into the pitch. Looked like he was a little rattled after letting in a run. I asked the coach, "Is there a new rule that we give a warning for balks in Freshmen ball"? He didn't say a word after that. Freshmen ball = Freshmen Coach
  9. Is the nutty buddy just an improved cup? What's so special about it?
  10. The ball never went out of play, it just rolled to the fence, about 6 feet from 1st base. The contact occured after F3 lost the ball. There's no way he would've made it to 2nd. The fence was too close
  11. Hey Chief, is it me or is the time off on this site. All the post times are wrong, at least when I view them.

  12. Thanks for the advice. I'm learning more and more that the hardest part about umpiring isn't calling balls/strikes, fair/foul, safe/out, it's handling the coaches and players. Taking control of the game is vital to success in this business. I want to do this for a long long time, but I want to do it as close to perfectly as possible. We're the only ones on the field that are expected to be perfect. The players and coaches aren't held to the same standard. As for this season, I've done 8 games (2 weekend Double Headers) and had 3 rainouts so far (3rd one today). Better than last yr where I only did 2 games in the first 3 wks because of the horrible rainy Mar/April we had. Good luck to you too.
  13. Boy, you guys know how to welcome newcomers. Thanks for busting my chops, you guys had me thinking twice about this site. Thought we were all supposed to stick together, you guys had me going for a minute. You guys are alright!

  14. The way I was always taught, no matter what sport I officiate, is that the staff or field administration handles the fans. You can stop the game, call over the field admin or talk to the coaches of the home team. Let them know that the fans are out of hand, and that you will not continue the game until they are warned or leave the grounds. This way, you are not liable for ejecting any sue happy parents or fans. You handle it indirectly. I would never scream or insult a fan. It's not our job.
  15. Hey guys, I'm a 3rd yr ump. I just discoverd this site today and am looking forward to many posts for as long as I put on the shoulder pads and face mask. Just want to leave everyone with one thing I've learned and would like to pass along. This is a great game and we have a responsability to the players to be pros out there. It's always better to work your way up than to work at a level above your head. I've done it and it's not the easiest thing to handle coaches and managers when you don't have the experiance. Thanks guys and I look forward to the back and forth communication.
  16. Hey guys, I'm a 3rd yr. umpire. I've been officiating sports since 07. I also do football and basketball. Baseball is my passion and I hope to get better and learn from this Forum. I have a ton of questions and situations that can't always be answered in the rule books. Thanks for all your help guys.

  17. What's the proper call in a HS game? Situation: Batter hits ground ball to F6, F6 throws to F3 who while standing completely on first base, fumbles the ball which ends up going through his leggs to the fence. Right after that, the baserunner plows into him and they both fall down. I just called the baserunner safe. The offensive teams coach wanted me to call Interference on F3 for blocking the path of the runner. What would you have called?
  18. Calablue, thanks. That's exactly what happend. Naturally the coach of the defensive team claimed that the ball is dead once it hits the dirt. It was either on a 0-1 count or 1-1 so it being called a ball didn't mean much. The problem was with the coach claiming it was dead. For the first time in a long time, I didn't really know what to do. That's why I stuck with the "he made no effort to get outta the way" excuse. Guess we're just wrong sometimes. This is a great forum. I'm now more informed.
  19. I had a coach blow up on me because I appealed to the base umpire twice. Both went against his team. The first was in the 3rd inning where his player tried to check and on appeal the base ump said he went. The second came in the 6th where the opposing teams batter checked and the base ump called it a no swing. He ran from 3rd and exploded. Saying that he deserved the same call, and that there was no point in appealing, it was clearly a swing. There was no swearing so I let him go on. There were about 50 spectators in the stands and he just kept going and going. After he cooled off, he went back to 3rd and didn't say a word the rest of the game. His team won by 2. Afterwards, my base ump came up to me and said, I don't know how you let him talk to you like that. I would've given him the boot right away. Guess we all have different tolorence levels.
  20. Hey everybody, I'm a 3rd yr. HS ump. I had a situation a few days ago where the batter was in his batters box, awaiting the pitch, which bouced off the dirt in front of the plate and hit the batter. He never made an effort to get out of the way so I told him to stay put. I felt a little helpless becasue I'm not sure of the correct call. Both skippers came out to argue they were correct. I've been combing through the NFHS rules book but couldn't find anything specific to balls in the dirt that hit the batter. Thanks for your help.
  21. Hey guys, had a situation a few days ago in a High School game. Whats the correct call if a batter, in the batters box, gets hit by a ball that bounces in the dirt and hits him. Need to know this in case it comes up again. My assigner said I should have just given him 1st base. Can's find anything in the NFHS rules book in regards to this. Thanks
