MLB Ejections 148 - Manny Gonzalez (3; George Springer)

HP Umpire Manny Gonzalez ejected Blue Jays RF George Springer (Replay Review decision that upheld Gonzalez's ball/HBP no-call; QOCN) in the top of the 7th inning of the #BlueJays-#Angels game. With one out and none on, Blue Jays batter George Springer took a 1-2 cutter from Angels pitcher Kenny Rosenberg for a called second ball, affirmed as no hit-by-pitch upon Replay Review as the result of a challenge by Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Replays indicate the pitch was located inside and appeared to touch Springer's foot in the batter's box, the call was incorrect. At the time of the ejection, the Blue Jays were leading, 5-0. The Blue Jays ultimately won the contest, 6-1.

This is Manny Gonzalez (79)'s 3rd ejection of 2024.

Springer is a docuhe but he certainly seemed to go from "on his way to making peace and getting back into the box" to Votto/Harper territory very quickly. I wonder why.

once again, E(error) management. there is IR (infra red) technology used in the 2011 World Series game 1. however, an over 11 billion dollar industry is too cheap to use the technology that did come into play in Game 1 of that series, but since the technology was just on for display purposes, it could not be officially used for the game, but it more than showed what it can do. Spend the money and this can be alleviated. heck, they cannot even get that high low pitch problem corrected with all the greatest tech guys in the world. what did bruce willis say in armegeddon. "and you mean this is the best you got"

Sure, maybe...but, frankly, you didn't need the technology.  In this case you simply needed to use common sense and put context clues together to come to a solid conclusion to whether or not Springer was hit by the pitch.   You show this video to 20 non-biased people in a bar, and 20 people will tell you he got hit by the pitch. To put it another way, if the call was overturned, not a single member of the Angels organization would have disputed it...it would have just been another replay review...properly used in a situation where the umpire understandably missed the call.

The replay review official failed miserably in this regard.

He decided he needed to literally see the ball literally hit Springer's foot - that is not the job requirement, nor the standard.  It's not the standard in real time (how many umpires actually see a foul tip, rather than hear it?)...it's not the standard for replay.  It was conclusive, even if you didn't actually see the two objects hit each other.
