MLB Ejections 207-8 - Pat Hoberg (2-3; BOS x2)

HP Umpire Pat Hoberg ejected Red Sox RF Alex Verdugo (strike two call to Adam Duvall; QOCY) in the 4th and manager Alex Cora (ball four to Alex Bregman, but really strike three calls to Justin Turner; QOCY) in the bottom of the 7th inning of the #RedSox-#Astros game. All you need to know for this report is all callable pitches under contest (strike call to Verdugo in the 3rd, strike call to Duvall in the 4th, strike three calls to Turner in the 3rd and 7th, ball four to Bregman in the 7th) were properly officiated, the call was correct. At the time of Verdugo's ejection, the Astros were leading, 2-0. At the time of Cora's ejection, the Astros were leading, 3-0. The Astros ultimately won the contest, 7-3.

These are Pat Hoberg (31)'s 2nd and 3rd ejections of 2023.

So, who are they going to argue with, using an ABS system. And they would have lost their challenges with a limited challenge system on ball/strike. So with misses on the challenge system and losing the right to challenge for everyone else, you only self protect yourself and not the rest of the players. So, are only the superstars going to be allowed to challenge in the future on both pitches and plays on the bases, and the non superstars just suck it up. So much for a team game.

And if only the manager can do all challenges, are they going to keep a list to make sure they are challenging equally among the players and not just the superstars. Remember life is not necessarily fair.

All good points here...my guess is, once ABS with challenges comes to MLB it's going to take at LEAST a generation of ballplayers and coaches to adjust how they engage with the umpires. The bottom line is, they complain because the calls go against them. They always have. The always will. Instinctively, away from the pressure of the game I think they all understand fundamentally that once ABS and challenges are in place, it's pointless and prohibited to argue with the umpires. But, they will be looking to take out their frustrations about a "missed" close call and the umpires will address it accordingly as they always have.

I find it interesting that one of the by-products of ABS will be a significant reduction in umpire abuse. Again, it will take a generation but, we'll get there...
