Teachable Tag, A Swipe at Second, Magnifying May

In this Teachable Moment, tmac looks at 2B Umpire Ben May's positioning on a swipe tag play at second during a stolen base attempt by Angels baserunner David Fletcher, whom is thrown out by White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal.

May's out call was challenged by Los Angeles and confirmed as the correct ruling by Replay Review HQ. Notable is May's position adjustment as the play develops to create a better angle to see the tag on the runner's knee.

I love that we are starting to more commonly embrace the fact that being stationary the whole time is NOT the best way to do it.  Move with the play, see what you need to see, get stationary, and then make the call.

I also love the "Bang it and boogie!" mechanic.  Sell the call and move on down the road.  😁

Used be the advice to bang it and boogie, most effective on an inning ending play where you make the manager hump out to the grass while you stand there. Things change though with replay in the pros and NCAA encouraging meeting the coach and being approachable.

Yup...bang and boogie, brother! I don't know how psychologically effective it is and how many times a coach has seen me bang and boogie and said to himself, "Meh...I ain't going all the way out there on this..." but, I will say when I get to bang and boogie, I've never had a coach come out. I have had them yell from outside the dugout which if we are under FED is "leaving the dugout to dispute judgement" and could be a seatbelt. It's a good move and I think it helps sell whacker outs. Anybody else on this?
