Donaldson makes a great jumping catch, spin and tag.  U3 is on outfield side of bag so he calls safe, seems view would be blocked the way this play developed.

Would U3 ever go infield position on throw from right field?

I think his starting point would have been best.  I think he over-rotated.....and ....he was moving when the tag happened.  Of course, you try to read the throw and what's happening and to get into the best position, ....sometimes it doesn't work ....

(Caveat: this is not a slam on Gibson, ....just my personal opinion and observation)

watching it again, I'd agree the original spot he stops in would have been a better angle as well, not knocking Gibson either, near impossible to know how the play develops and you have to use your judgement and experience on where to position yourself

however, would the rotation ever call to rotate to your right and move to the infield side of the bag?

In 4 man on a play like this, don't you put the bag between you and the throw, and then adjust from there?  In this case, he would be in foul territory and then adjust a step to his left since the throw is going to the right side of the bag.  Would have given him a great view and allow him to be set at the time of the tag.

He starts toward that part, but then adjusts as he reads a tag at the base (as opposed to a swipe tag).

No.

The issue with U3 going inside, other than all those extra steps to get into position, is that there's too much opportunity to get tangled up with the play, be it with the runner, a throw coming from third base, etc.

I don't see how the second part relates to the first in this situation. The whole purpose of keeping the bag between you and the ball is for a tag at the base. On a swipe tag, you get on the fielder's hip.
