See a podiatrist. Get custom orthotics. You will not believe how great your feet will feel.

ive written several posts about it here over the years. Search. Lots of info.

i have two pairs of the orthotics. Still doing a great job since February of 2008.

I use insoles on my NB950s because I had the same problem. The biggest issue for me has always been arch support and getting good insoles (not Dr. Scholl's) with arch support was the best thing I did.

One of the best brands I've seen widely recommended is Superfeet, but there are loads of others out there.

^^^This! I just ordered mine. Don't buy the ones at the store. Go the extra step (no pun intended), spend a few more dollars, and I promise you that you will not regret it.

Check your health insurance as medical appliances are sometimes covered. At least partially. Mine cost me $25 each. Well worth it.

Howdy.

My base shoes I'm finding are really uncomfortable, and have been for a while. Have any of you had these problems? If so, what have you done in regard to insoles?

How old are your shoes?  You can "fix" the insoles, but the mid-soles will break down before the outersoles, and you can't fix that.  I'd say about 100 games is enough for the pair of shoes (replacing the insoles after 50).

Also, if you have two pair and rotate them, that will help (especially if you are working the bases almost every day -- try to never wear the same pair two days in a row)

With orthotics the shoes will be comfortable a lot longer than 100 games. At that rate I'd need two pairs of plate and base shoes a year. Not gonna happen.

Just got them, but this is an ongoing problem, no matter the shoe. It's a new Balance, if that matters.

Then I second the recommendation for orthotics (or at least for seeing a podiatrist).

Unless you have plantar fasciitis like me.  Then the insoles really don't do much at all.

I had a mild case of it, enough to where anti-inflammatory pills took it away, and it hurt soooooooooo bad. I can't even begin to imagine what a more extreme case would feel like.

Get new feet.

Sorry. Not a option. Men's Health had an article within the last month or so about PF and a way to get some relief. Look it up. If you haven't already.

So an update. I have not gone to an ortho yet, but on recommendation by a friend of mine who's an MD, I went to Spenco and grabbed a pair of full-size insoles. He told me to rip out the New Balance insoles — which I did — and replace them. So far, I've worn them around the house for an hour and they were pretty comfortable. I have a few games this weekend, so we'll see how they feel.

I've always found it weird, especially because i find the plate shoes so comfortable.

Just took a look at that article.  I'm going to give it a try.

Have a tournament this weekend and THREE games on Monday.  Very nervous because I haven't worked THREE games for several years because of the pain.  Probably going to take a cooler full of ice and put my feet in there between games to numb them.

thanks to this thread (and no thanks to my aching feet), I went to the podiatrist this week and will have orthotics in 2 weeks........can't wait to try them out.

Orthotics should come with instructions to wear for limited periods of time for a few days to allow your feet to adjust to them. My first wearing was a plate job. Since that's when I had the most trouble was after working a plate. I found the adjustment time to be quicker than the recommendation from the doctor. Good luck.

Spenco update:

My first game wearing the new soles was Saturday, after a plate job (one plate). Slight pain, but I chalked it up to breaking the shoes in. Sunday (after two plates), I felt a bit better. Don't remember much pain. More importantly, the pain in my knees was basically nonexistent, which felt awesome. I feel that my feet will feel great in a few games' time.
