very true...by saying he made "a conscious effort to make no room for F5" i thought intentional interference was made clear...guess not...

Interference is going to be a tough sell. If you have him doing something intentional to keep the F5 from catching the ball then kill the ball, call R3 out, return R2 to second and place the BR at first.

He can make a conscious effort at not moving and be OK, he can't stand on the base and move toward the fielder or wave his hands or anything of that sort.

It's sort of hard to read intent (especially if something physical is going on) on a message board.

Definitely a HTBT situation.

If he is merely standing on the base, his right in the situation, which just happens to be in the fielders way; too bad for F5.

If while standing on the base makes any other movement to get in the way of F5 I may be calling it.

This will probably cause a S^&( storm from the OC.

The R3 is called out for his intentional interference with a protected fielder in the act of fielding a fair batted ball (despite being in contact w. his base), and the BR is called out as well for his teammates' intentional interference. Half inning over.

OK - I could be wrong here, but I think you can call two outs here only if R3's intereference was a deliberate attempt to break up a double-play. To me, that's not the way the OP reads. I think mstaylor has it right.

Rule 7.08( Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.

If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional. If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two out, the umpire shall declare the batter out.
