A Little Help

Ok guys, here's the play...give me a little help on correct call, when the ball is dead, and where players should end up.

 

HS Varsity game, R1 on 2nd, R2 on 1st, 1 Out.  Pitcher attempts to pick off R1 and throws ball into center field, center fielder bobbles the ball and R1 rounds 3rd and heads for home.  PU repeatedly verbally warns batter to get out of the way of the impending play at the plate but the batter does not and the PU calls the runner out on Interference.  R2 was between 2nd and 3rd at the time of the interference call continues towards third, catcher grabs ball and throws the ball to the 3rd baseman where a tag was applied before R2 reaches third.

Ok, the batter would not get out of the way of his own runner? I'm confused. Did R2 (runner from 2nd base, using logical terminology) actually run into the batter? Please clarify.

If the PU actually had interference, R1 who you call R2 would return to last base legally touched at time of interference. Time would/ should be called at the time of this interference call. Please do not use FED runner terminology even if it is a FED sit. Let them use it in their caseplays.

Was there an actual play at the plate or just a potential one?

 

If there was a play did the batter actually interfere or was his presence inconsequential?

Batter stayed in the box and interfered with the catcher's ability to make a play.

Partner called time at the moment of the interference, the runner who had originally been on 1st was sent back to 2nd (the last base he had legally possessed before the interference), and the runner at home was declared out.

 

The questions during our postgame were?

 

1.  Correct to call time, or should it have been a delayed dead ball.  Felt we were right but could not quickly pull up the rule reference.

2.  Batter returns to base last possessed at TOT or Time of Interference.

For NFHS games:

1.  Call time was correct.

2.  TOI was correct.

I am still trying to picture this play. The runner from 2nd actually scored, and the play was being made on the following runner from 1st at 3rd base. Where was the batter, and how did the first runner score if he was still in the box?

The applicable provision here is 3-2-3: "... nor shall the base coach or members of the team at bat fail to vacate any area needed by a fielder in his attempt to put out a batter or runner." This is INT: the ball is dead, the runner being played on is out, and other runners return to their TOI base.

 

Note also that the batter simply not moving is nothing unless there is actual hindrance. No hindrance = no INT.

 

This is not like coach INT, which is a delayed dead ball: the reason for the delay is that assisting a runner does not hinder the defense making a play, it's just illegal assistance to one's own team. So we leave it live to allow the defense to play on other runners.

 

TOT is never an option for INT: that's an option for some base awards, which is not what we have here. For FED returning runners for runner INT is always TOI. Some kinds of INT return runners to their TOP bases.

That's pretty easy.  You can easily be in the box and not in the baseline.

He's not asking whether the judgment call was correct. He's asking whether the enforcement was correct.

 

Even with a better description, judgment of hindrance is going to be HTBT. Maybe if he had video we could talk about the judgment call.
