So, the BR hits the ball to F6 and beats the throw to first, but the BR missed the bag.  BU (not me I was PU but saw it) signals safe as we have been instructed to do.  He waited for an appeal that never came.  I think most will say get the out but is that the correct call?

Call safe, wait for appeal, it doesn't come, BR is still safe, no?

BU exhibited proper mechanics.

How can you "get the out"? The defense did not retire the runner. The runner beat the throw, and they never appealed the missed base.

Sounds good then.  We talked after the game and he said normally he would have called the BR out but thanks to the association meeting the day before he did the correct mechanic but said it felt weird to call the BR safe in this situation.

I know this has been hashed out a few times already. but here is my next question.

How long for the appeal? If the runner came back and touched first, can
DT still appeal? Or is he safe on appeal because he has now corrected his miss?

Is he touching the base?

If so he's corrected the miss - just like at any other base.

So basically it's a race.  If the BR gets back and touches 1B before the Defense can appeal the missed base, he's safe....he's corrected his error.

If the Defense appeals before the BR gets back to correct his mistake, it's an out.

The only real "time limit" is the next play initiated by the Defense as defined in the rule book.....making a pickoff move, pitching, etc.   Once any of those happens, it's too late for the D to appeal.
