Baseball: Buena head coach Harry Grose 'feels bad' about 52-3 win

It looks like Georgia has changed their rule since I was in high school 21 years ago.  Back then it was 20 after 3, 15 after 4, 10 or 12 (I forget which) after 5.  We played one school 4 times in my time there and made it to the 4th inning once.  It was always a good day for the offensive stats.  

 

 

My worst game, came this year and fortunately had a clock involved.  42-0.  The winning team was swinging at anything that they could reach, and there was not many pitches that were in the same area code as the plate so most were hitting pitches way inside or way outside.  One base at a time in an 18 run 3rd inning.  It is not a good idea to get the athletic kid that has never played baseball before to play 3rd base in a travel league.  I had never witnesses double digit errors on a single player until that night.  There were about 8 of them in the 3rd inning and half of them he got no leather on and they rolled between his legs.

I had the plate in a HS Varsity game on Tuesday that was 28-3.  Home team coach said "If this bleeds any more, start calling my kids out for being out of the box and contacting the ball".  I told him that it will not get to that point hopefully but have your guys swinging. Obviously I did not do so, but the zone was huge.  It was 19-1 after the 1st inning.  At least ten can of corn fly balls to outfield that weren't even close to caught and seven ground balls to short that were fielded just fine and F6 never threw them to first.

Everyone HS Coach knows (or should know) that a harmless way to hurry a game along is to send your batters up to step on the plate and foul off a bunt.  3 pitches, half an inning over.  If the other coach was really humiliated, this could have only made it stop the bleeding.  It's not up there with throwing a game.

I had the plate in a HS Varsity game .. At least ten can of corn fly balls to outfield that weren't even close to caught and seven ground balls to short that were fielded just fine and F6 never threw them to first.

​I can believe it.  There's a school here in Norfolk that is historically bad.  (Well, when I say 'historically,' I mean during my two stints here in the area over the last eight years.  Look, not everything is the frigging Plymouth rock, okay??!?)

Anyway, I had a game of theirs last week.  15 (I think) - 0 after 4 1/2 innings, and it wasn't even THAT close.  In fact, the home team spent the 3rd and 4th innings bunting.  And I SEEM to recall there may have been a bunt or two in those first two fateful innings.

There were at least three fly balls hit that were just completely misjudged, with not even a 'tick' of a glove hit on the ball.  The RF, on the other hand, on the only fly ball he played - although he ALSO failed to catch his - at least managed, via a long run to the gap and a full-on dive, got his glove on it, but the ball came out as he landed.  Ironic.

The kids on this team (last time I saw them play was about five years ago) at least gave the body language of WANTING to be there.  Unfortunately, they were just not good.  More or better coaching when they were younger might have made a big difference.
