Y'all see this guy? His name is Chad Bentz.

Pretty normal looking pitcher, right? (Other than being one handed.)

Yeah. Yeah. He's pretty cool. But guess who he pitched for in high school? THE JUNEAU DOUGLAS CRIMSON BEARS.

Turns out HE CAME BACK a little while ago.

AND NOW I KNOW WHY THE BOY'S GYM TEACHER ALWAYS SAYS HE LIKES MY UMPIRE HAT.

That went over my head but I think I will like it if you give more clues. Or, I am clueless.

The Phys. Ed. teacher at my school is a former MLB pitcher.

My daughters gym teacher is a former MiLB player.

Bentz played for the Marlins and the Expos and a Rockies Spring Training, I think.

My gym teacher in Jr. high in the mid 70's was an NFL referee. He grabbed me and another kid I was fist fighting with and slammed our heads together. Fight stopped right then. Then he gave us each five licks with a paddle in gym shorts and called our fathers. My dad, a former USMC DI and the other kid's dad, a US Army Ranger Master Sergeant whipped both of our asses with belts at home. No more fighting at school or in gym class for me.

And therein lies the problem with society today. If that had happened today, the teacher would have been sued, parents would have been arrested for abuse, youtube videos posted, and public outrage communicated via social media .

How true. We need to go back to those days where kids were held responsible for their actions. Today we are liable to be accused of abuse for disciplining our kids the way our parents did. Sure I was paddled, but I learned from it and never repeated what I was paddled for.

I was disciplined when I was younger. I now suffer from "respect for others" and "not breaking the friggen law."

Although now that I am older my parents know it is much more effective to confiscate my laptop and phone.

They can also take away your Greg Gibson official face mask and fan club card.....

HOW COULD ANYBODY DO THAT TO A POOR INNOCENT CHILD.

In my case, and speaking only for myself......I was far from innocent. I seemed to always be pushing the envelope so to speak. My dad was a hit first, ask questions later kinda guy. As were my grandparents and my aunts and uncles. Seems like every adult in my family swatted me for something at one time or another. I think I turned out okay. All that being said, I only spanked my son three times and my daughter once. Two of my son's were for running across the street without looking for traffic. The other was for hitting his little sister. Daugjter's was for back talking her mother and me after being warned.

When I coached high school football the head coach was a strict disciplinarian but he'd been in the game about 25 years so he left the actual yelling, whistle blowing and all that noise to us assistants. Because I'm very loud and had been in the Army so long he usualy left it to me to mete out the punishment calisthenics and running. (That and I wasn't much of a football strategy genius-mostly a fundamentals watchdog).

One day after he stopped a really bad, unfocused practice and said "Coach, you've got twenty minutes. See if you can get their attention." So I started smoking them with grass drills, belly dives and sprints. When I finished with them we went back to regular practice and it seemed to work. They had focus and the sideline Grabassery stopped. He turned to me and said one of the greatest coaching and parenting quotes I've ever heard.

"you know Dave, sometimes learning just has to be painful."

Awesome quote. Wish it wasn't true but it works.

I think this gets a hijack prize. Chad Bentz to our childhood discipline.

I got it for a lot of reasons. Most I can't remember now because obviously I learned enough to stop doing that crap, although I was and still am far from innocent as well. Did and do turn up the snark too far. I do remember beaning my older brother in the back of the head with a softball and really getting it good when I was maybe seven. Now it's only my grades that really get me in trouble.

Sorry for the hijack.  By all indications you are a good kid Rulekeep.  You are definitely articulate and intelligent.  Other than your usual teenage afflictions-we all had them, you are a valued member of this forum/website.  I am sure your parents are proud of you in spite of your best efforts to make them regret it.

i dont believe in hitting a child

And that's the problem in today's society.

I don't believe I ever hit a curve ball with any consistency, hence I umpire.

There's a difference between a few smacks with a palm and a slap with the knuckles or a full out punch.
