I worked a Varsity Fall ball game last night with a "veteran" partner. Overall he did okay... But with a right handed batter and my partner being in A position. We had a check swing appeal as soon as I said "no he didn't go" the catcher immediately asked me to check the swing. Without hesitation I do.

I stand and point to my partner with my left hand, "(insert name here) did he go?" Only then did I realize he was 5-10 feet off the foul line chatting it up with a mom. Not even a good looking one at that. I'd cut him a little slack if she were a hottie, but this wasn't the case by a long shot. Well he didn't hear me the first time so I had to ask again. Now I think we both look pretty bad. He delays a moment then signals safe.

Grrrr.

Was your partner in A when the pitch was thrown? When you started the half inning?

Warren, you have to be a little quicker when the BU is caught napping.

"OK then, Base Coach [use name instead if possible], did he go?"

Proceed.

I wish I'd looked up at him before I appealed. If I had seen him I would have denied the appeal. Foolish me thinking he was paying attention to the game.
