I will be taking the 2009 FED Rules test this upcoming weekend. We take the test online. I will report back on any poorly worded, confusing, or otherwise bad questions that the NFHS is famous for throwing in there.

If you haven't taken the FED test before it is famous for taking a simple rule or concept and wording it such it confuses the reader. I wish I could remember the exact question from a few years ago, but they used a double negative in their question and my answer ended up being wrong based on my interpretation of what the test was asking, but my application and reasoning on the answer was correct.

I will not give a question by question break down at this time, but that may be a good discussion starter for after the exam deadline has passed.

No. 69 is a good example of the use of a double negative.

That question is a perfect example of a good umpire who knows the rule and the concept could get screwed up by the poor wording of the test.

The question is:

A pitcher may not wear or use a multicolored glove even if it is not distracting the batter.

Warren and gang, took the Fed test the other day got a 99%, my buddy got a 96% we both felt that this was the most fair test they ever assembled. A few mind benders to be sure, but overall if you have a rule book with you and go over each qestion a 90% is almost guaranteed. The double negatives and NOTS are always the worst. Take your time and review the book. Looking forward to hearing your score Mr. Umpire in Chief!

Was this the Part II test you both took. I haven't gotten my copy yet. When I do, I will also have the rule cites. Evidently not all groups give these out. I can't imagine why they wouldn't.

My association took Part I.

Did they give the answer sheet with the cites. If not, I can send them to you. We use Part I as practice and then take Part II for real.

Mike, was that question for me?

If so, the answer is "No, we don't get the answers with our exam, nor the cites." :D

Is this a common practice in other areas of the country? B)

I know many areas do. We always do it after the guys finish the test. We do it in a proctored situation, grade them on completion, let the guys mark which ones they got wrong and then give them the answer sheet with the rule cites so they can go back in the book and find why they were wrong. Then if they have additional questions they can call me for individual instruction.

Oh, AFTER the test... for a minute I thought you were saying that the test was handed out, the answers were included! B)

I like the idea of the post-test review to cover wrong answers.... our association does that as well... usually it boils down to just a handful of questions that guys may have stumbled over.

We also have groups of guys that get together (after answering their own exams) and go over the questions with rule book cites - - it becomes a sort of clearinghouse for "How would you rule on this play?" type of thing. 3,4 or 5 guys, usually, and of course, a BBQ grill and a some beer make the whole event enjoyable.

In VA we take Part I. Part II is reserved for coaches/umpires who miss the clinics. I'll be taking either tonight or Sunday. My buddy ump81 and a friend of ours set the bar high for me, so the pressure is on.

Got a 98 so split the difference b/t the 2 of you . Unfortunately they do not tell you which ones you got wrong , so I can't see if I was just not paying attention, it was a bad question, or I just kicked it.

As I wrote last yeat the test is online and in order to get anything out of the test I took the question and tried to come up with the rule citation to verify my answer. I only changed my answer 1-2 times after seeing it in the book. Even if it were done the old way I'd have scored over 90.

Hopefully you will be able to get back in after the testing windo is over and I can see which ones I got wrong.

I took the test last night after I got home from our rules meeting in oklahoma. I started about 11:00 pm and ended a little before 1:00 am. I scored an 88%, which I was pleased with for the time of day that I took the test and that it was my first time ever to take it. I am just glad to have passed and now I am ready to get some real study done and get started.

I took my test last Wednesday. It was Part 1...

Almost fell out of my chair when they popped up my score of 93:WTF.

Now, as my man Forrest Gump says, " I'm not a smart man....", but I could not believe that I had missed 7 questions..

My favorite trick question was ( and I remember it vervatim):

"A defensive conference is over once the head coach first turns to leave"

According to the book the correct answer is TRUE IF the conference was held in FOUL territory. But if the conference was held in fair territory, i.e the mound comes immediately to mind, then the conference is considered over, by rule, when the coach crosses the foul line.

I first marked 'true' but then changed it to 'false after flipping a coin...

I tried to access exams.nfhs.org tonight to check my answer sheet like the instructions said we could but the site has been dismantled with no way, that I can find, to review your test.

Anyone have any luck getting your review to pull up?
