Tonight my local Little League had their 2014 board elections.

I am proud to announce that I was elected!! The only competition I had was the current UIC, who decided the event not important enough to attend.....

SO effective October 1st, I am the Umpire in Chief of the Waterford Little League!

It will all depend on the rest of your Board.

If they do not support Umpires it may not be very much fun.

I would never accept any position on a LL Board again.

Congrats and hope it works for you.

Congrats. Try to remember that you are there to drain the swamp when the alligators are biting your a$$.

Thanks everyone except Bobby! :P

Honestly right now I have a lot of hopes and goals for the league, but I need to be realistic. In terms of umpires and the current rules, there is almost nowhere to go but up... I need to be careful with myself not to become too radical too fast and scare the rest of the board. I know they are on my side, but the new kid on the block, fresh graduated from high school four months ago, is not going to turn the league on its head (which is almost what's needed) very quickly... I need to move slowly, with something like a three year plan, to get the umpires and the league to where I want (and my goals are pretty high)

I will have a mixed pool come spring. Some of what I have will be "fresh meat" so to speak. 14-16 year olds (some anxious 13 year olds), who come in knowing nothing but how baseball is played. This I really look forward to, teaching them a whole new element they never gave much thought to prior... What worries me is the rest of the umpires. Those who have been working with me and around me for three years now, THINK they know what they're doing, when in fact they know absolutely no mechanics.

But until Spring, my goal is simple: RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT!!!

Have monthly meetings. League should pay/reimburse for Pizza and soda. (Do you have a meeting toom at League?)Or a library meeting room.

I have some Powerpoints you can use, PM me you home e mail and I will get them to you. Adjust them to your needs.

Get some women involved, tell them all you want to break the glass ceiling (They all love that)

Uniforms for the 13 to 18 YOs. Polo and hat on you. Black long sweat pants on them.

Adults should be in full dress. (same if paired) My rule was powder blue for day games, and navy blue for night.(After 6) Do what you want, but KISS.

Evaluate. That means you better kiss your wife goodbye in March, tell her you will see her in August.

Thanks! Just recently the local school district offered the league an office suite at the district offices... They have access to the full building, including a gym and meeting place!

Training, evaluating, and rewarding are my three keys... This past season, there was very little training, absolutely no evaluating, and the games were given to the "favorites"... I want to train throughout, evaluate so they know how to improve, and reward those who listen and improve with the good assignments.
