in central Ohio, assigners are generally paid by the league/tournament...I've never heard of a per-game fee in this area. Now of course it's implicit in the rates but generally, as I understand it, these are season-long flat fees paid by the league/tournament/etc.

Why isn't the assigner being paid from the umpires association dues? He shouldn't get a piece of the umpires fees.

Different ways of doing it in different areas, Manny.  And no matter how you slice it the assigner is getting a portion of the fees (and in most cases its well deserved).

Don't get me wrong. I do believe that the assigner should be compensated, as it is not an easy job and there is a lot of phone work to do, but the fee should come out of the association dues/treasury, not from the umpires game fees.

Example: 50 game season:

50 umpires x 25 games = 1250 assignments x $5.00 per assignment = $6,250.00   C'mon, that's a bit much for an assigner.

1 umpire x 25 games = $25.00 x $5.00 per assignment = $125.00   22 of 25 games are payable. 3 free bees.

As you can see, $5.00/game is a huge payout. I can understand $1000.00 or even $1500.00 per year, but $6,250.00? That's ridiculous. You KNOW that there are more than 50 games in most associations to assign, so the payout is even BIGGER.

Sorry, I just don't agree with that type of method for compensation.

Your math is off.  If there are 50 games and two umpires per game that's 100 assignments.    at $5 per assignment that's $500.

And again, you are arguing about the amount.  It doesn't matter if the league pays the assigner who sends some to the umpires, or if the league pays the umpires who send some to the assigner, or if the league sends some to the assigner and some to the umpires, or if the league pays an association  who sends some to the assigner and some to the umpires.  For a given price level, the league pays the same total amount, the umpires get the same total amount and the assigner gets the same total amount.

If you want to think that more should go to the umpires and less to the assigner, that's a different argument entirely.

Wait, I see where my mistake was:

If you have 50 umpires who each get 25 games, THAT is equal to 1250 assignments. At $5.00 per assignment, this will equate to $6,250.00.   The 50 game season was the wrong part. That's still a lot of money! For that kind of cash, let me assign!

Go for it.  Whatever "it" is in your area.  If it's currently $5 / umpire / game and your willing to do it for $4 you can give the league a 50 cent break and give the umpires a 50 cent raise and have lots of business.

Wow, now I feel like we're being robbed. The average pay around here is 25 bucks (for league/tournaments, not school sanctioned). This includes the high school rec league.
