13u scrimmage. The catcher goes out to the mound and the infielders all gather around and the coach defensive coach yells "hey - all 6 can't be on the mound - one of you get off"

so a few innings later I asked the coach about it as he was walking past. He said it was major league and it was really that they couldn't have 7 on counting the coach. He said "you know how one of the infielders always steps off to the side?"

Coach's cheese fell off his cracker. No such rule. In Pro Rules, 8.06 governs visits to the mound. The whole team (9 players) can go to the mound if so called by the manager to do so, but I'm sure the home plate umpire will want to know exactly what is going on.

Pony used to have a limit, not sure about now. It was pitcher plus two. May have been an old AL rule, have to check old books.

Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2

In the AL many many moons back multiple infielders were not allowed at the mound meeting. In the NL they could have them all.

That's what I remembered but hadn't gone back looking in old books to verify.

Theres not enough room on the mound for 7 pro atheletes (well 6 and a coach). Theres plenty of room for 7 12 year olds. Just cause it happens doesn't make it a rule. Its how myths and superstitions get started.
