My game today....

So, working the Regional Finals for the summer HS Baseball league, 3 man, I've got the dish, working with 2 umpires I really like, one of whom I've worked a fair amount with, the other only a couple of games ever.

 

Driving to the game, my car said it was hot out.

 

 

It felt hot. Reports had the heat index at 105 to 110. 

 

Two teams playing are both good baseball program schools, and happen to be a private school and a public school located about a mile from each other. Most of the players know each other, fierce rivalry, but generally refreshingly sportsmanlike.

 

Visitors go up 3 - 0 on a dinger in the 3rd, chip out one in the 4th, another in the 5th. Home team rallies in the 6th, scoring 2 on bases loaded walks. (I did get a chirp from the defensive coach after the second run plated, but he was low key about it, so I responded in kind.)

 

Had an "infield in" play at the plate that was very close, but the catcher did a great job of riding the runner off the plate after he caught the throw and tagging him before he could reach it. I expected a conversation after that one, but didn't get a hint of one.

 

Game ended 5-2 in a full seven, went 1:50. Didn't really have any rotations with plays, but we seemed in synch on the potential ones. Took 2 fouls off the mask, and pitches off my "slot" shinguard (WP) and my "non-slot" instep (5 hole miss by F2 on another WP) - that one hurt a bit.

 

All in all, a pretty fun game, and there was a bit of a breeze, so it didn't feel quite as hot as it actually was.

We did have plenty of water.

 

I started hydrating yesterday.

 

We each brought water to the field and had about 5 different people offer us water as we first came on the field - the teams, a couple of fans, and the concession stand. Kind of nice, actually.

I won't take water from fans because I might have had their teams before and no telling what they'll do to it.

Same at the state coach's manager said they had water for us. the people in the cocession stand brought us waters without asking.
