About 3 years ago high inside fastball the batter swung ant and fouled to my mask.

I was stunned at the time a tad bit disorientated. But just tried to shake it off and threw a new ball in and signaled play the pitcher starts his windup I take my squat and my partner comes running up the line screaming "Time!"

I didn't notice I wasn't wearing my mask and infact it was lying against the backstop.

I felt fine the rest of the game. I got a bad headache by the time I got home. After getting home I felt nauseous. I had a mild headache for a few days.

Good partner.

Rolando and Larry, where do you put your hands so that your wrist is exposed?
My hands are to the outside of my thighs. The ball will find you if it wants to

Just left the doctors office. Possible fracture in 2 places. Have to see an ortho dr. Have the plate tonight. Arm will be behind me. Leave for CDP next week.

So true.  Perhaps put them further under, rather than the outside of, your thighs?

Worst shot I took was in my first full year, before I had learned to protect my wrists and hands. Took a pitch, untouched by either batter or catcher, to the index finger on my left hand resting on top of my shin guard - broke the tip of my finger.

Finished the game (took two hands to rotate the 'Ball' wheel on my indicator) and didn't miss any games, though I stopped working the plate for a couple of weeks until it healed enough to no longer be painful.

Other than that, your usual assortment of bumps & bruises; have a nasty bruise on my inner thigh I got 2 weeks ago that is just now starting to fade - for a few days, it was all of the (sickening) colors of the rainbow.

Looking at all these hand, forearm, wrist injuries, Old Smitty with his arms behind his back is looking better and better... :-)

If I ever sustained an injury that was severe enough for me to miss even a single game, I'd probably give up umpiring that day.

I've taken shots to the head (don't think I've ever had a full-on concussion though) and I've always worried about it. I figure I still have 50-70 years of life ahead of me. No reason to ruin any part of it because of a hobby, IMO.

well, you better quit now......I have not yet met any serious umpire who has not sustained an injury that caused them to miss a game whilst umpiring baseball..........if it hasnt happended it will.....if it has happended it will again.......yes, there are things you can do to lessen your chances.........better gear, better mechanics, but you cant cover all the bases.......(so to speak)........

I've been doing this for 8-years and just over 1,000 games and I've never missed a game because of injury. Knock on wood that it never happens. I've accumulated a solid map of bruises over my body along with a few cup and head shots, but nothing major. I have taken days off because of sheer exhaustion, but not because of injury.

I do this for fun. If I ever got hurt to the point that I'd miss a game or game(s) I don't think I'd feel that way anymore.

2 different shots to the collar bone (one on each side, months apart).  As i stated in an older post, i was never shown or told how to wear the CP properly......how and where it should fit.   Turns out i was wearing it WAY too loose...to the point where (obviously) my collar bones were exposed.  Both of them put me on my knees and i thought for sure i had broken them.....thankfully that wasn't the case and i now wear that s%$t up nice and tight.

Other than that, nothing major.  Took my first one to the Nutty Buddy the other night and didn't feel a thing.  *WHEW*
