Hey guys.  I work at the same sports complex as guyinaredhat (Twin Creeks, Sunnyvale), which is equipped with webcams (on certain fields).  The entirety of each tournament day is streamed live and archived here.  On Sunday, I will be on field 6, with games at 10:15, 12:30, 2:45, and 5:00.  The level will be 12U.  It would be great if you guys could give me feedback.  I'll post an update on Friday or Saturday once my partner and I decide who gets the dish for which games.

I'm going to be on a charity motorcycle ride & rally all day Sunday, but I'm always interested in seeing an up and comer work a few games. Is there a possibility that you could leave a link here to the games once they're archived?

Thanks!

Tim.

www.yourgamecam.com   Select Twin Creeks from the drop down menu.  Then, on the right, select field 6.  Every tournament day for the last month should be selectable.  If you select the current day, and click past the video buffer, you'll get the live stream.

Ok guys, I'll be on bases at 10:15 and 12:30, and on plate at 2:45 and 5:00 (Pacific Time).  The 5:00 game will be the 12U championship.

@PonyUmpire Caught a couple of innings. You looked good good timing sharp mechanics and good uniform. Only 2 minor comments on the squeeze play you started at 1blx and then went to 3blx. Try starting at pop. Easier transition to either side. Also when ur not solo and there's no one on 3rd don't call time to brush plate. All in all pretty damn good.

@PonyUmpire was this tourney FED?
No, why? Towards the end of your last game it looked to me like your partner called an OBS on a rundown between 1st and 2nd but kept the play live.

That's correct, I think he called type B obs (otherwise he would have killed it immediately).  Type A obs should have been called in this sitch though

At about 8:19:30 in the video, there's a play where I rotate to 3rd as PU.  A close umpire friend, who was watching the game, said I went too far into the infield.  Thoughts?

I agree with him. You had very good position for the play at 3rd but there's no way you were gonna get back home for a potential play there. Angle over distance in this case.

guyinredhat, I watched some of your first game and wanted to ask you about a play.  At about 1:14 (one hour, fourteen minutes), with R1 the pitcher fakes a throw to first where the defense act like the ball gets away, but F1 kept the ball.  Did F1 properly disengage?  It's hard to tell on the video.  Also, looked like R1 was tagged before he got his foot back on the bag - not that it was your call there.

I like your timing.  Nice strike call.  You stay down well on balls for the most part.  Seems like you splay your slot foot out (especially with lefty batters), which really exposes your ankle - I would square it up.  Also, your move to lock in looks...I don't know...funky.  Kind of looks like you bounce into it and are sometimes still moving when F1 releases the pitch.  Personally, I would use a wider stance, but everyone's knees are different.

Liked your hustle.  Moving up the line on grounders to the infield.  You seem to throw the ball to the pitcher a lot after foul balls. If F2 is not chasing it, just hand it to him to throw back.

Between innings, I think you stand too close.  This was an all-dirt infield, but if there was a dirt circle, you would have been well within it - which you should not be.  You are also on the 1B side between every inning.  You should be on offensive side - ensuring the batter isn't getting too close.

Play at 1:32.  Batter squares to bunt and either fouls it off, or the pitch hits him (I assume it hit him because you called "time" instead of "foul"). Batter starts for first and DC comes out.  You sent him back.  Did you judge that he offered?

Overall, I think you look great and teams are lucky to have you out there.  Nice job!

Pony, I'll certainly try when I get a chance.  I had already seen your previous videos and made some comments, which is why I watched guyinredhat first.  As I recall, you had made great strides from your first video to your second, so I look forward to seeing you again.

First off let me say thank you so much for taking the time to watch me umpire and offer some comments.  It means a lot.

Re:the pitcher stepping off.  I had him off the rubber,  but to be honest those portable mounds are shot. Not much rubber to judge with , more like a  groove the pitchers have worked into it.   So judgement call all the way.

IYes my plate stance is off, it's something Im concious of and working on.  I don't think I'm wide enough and I also think my feet are not heel -toe as i want them to be.  I also need to improve on locking in earlier.  I've been told im late before.

Re: throwing the ball

I like to throw it,,  if Doug Eddings gets to throw the ball back as hard as he wants then darn right I'm going to.  The only exceptions are when the catcher specifically asks he wants to throw it back, or if I make a bad throw, then I cut myself off and let the F 2 handle it

Re: the bunting batter , I called time .   I Had the  RH batter squaring to bunt, and the pitch way inside the batter  offered at it,  but i got blocked out and I thought it hit him. So  I called time.   In hindsight I should have  called time and vocalized something like " Time, that's  a stike he offered at it." Had i done that the DC coach wouldn't had came out, because the Batter and the Defense  thought I called time because of a HBP

I don't think it's a big deal to throw the ball back in certain situations, but I think you are making the game longer by doing it as much as you do.  There were times where all you had to do was take a ball out and hand it to F2, but instead, you take a few steps out and a couple toward F1, throw, and then have to get back in position.  Do this often and it just lengthens the game.

There are a few of circumstances that I consistently throw the ball back:

1.  Foul ball where I had to come up the line to make a ruling.  As soon as it drops foul, I take a ball out and throw it to F1.

2.  Anytime F2 is headed back to the backstop and anew ball is needed.

3.  HBP.  I take a few steps toward F1 and throw a new ball.

4.  Home run over the fence.

But if F2 is in front of me, I just hand him a new ball and let him throw it.

Very good points . Since you articulated the reasoning for your comments it helped change my mind attitude about it . Thanks for the response

No problem - it's not a big thing, but sometimes it's the small things that make for faster games.

Dont throw the ball back in youth ball unless you are doing 16U and above.

If little Johnny misses it and gets a face full of baseball you are the bad guy.
