Concerning a trip to the mound

If you can tell that a coach is "lighting up his players"  , do you give him a little extra time to get his point across? Or does it not make a difference?

What he is doing out there with his players is of no concern to us, with  one exception for me.  If it's young kids and I hear any kind of cursing out of him I will then step in and get rid of him.  Aside from that he should be afforded the same amount of time you would give any other coach making a trip, no more or less.

If you give him more time to "light them up", then your going to have to give the opposing coach more for any reason he can justify.  We're not there to provide anything extra for either team, but to ensure the fair enforcement of the rules so that no single team gains an unfair advantage.  Keep it the same for everyone, irregardless of the intent or situation.

I give the catcher a certain amount of time, the assistant coach a certain amount of time (more) and the head coach a certain amount of time (most).  Treat them all the same all the time.

When the manger/coach makes a trip to the mound I usually brush off the plate then stroll up the 1st or 3rd baseline depending on what dugout he came from. At about the halfway point I then make my way to the mound and say "Ok Guys lets go". They usually see me coming and break it up before I get there, I can't remember a time where I have had any problems with this strategy. However if there has been a controversial play shortly before, they may have gone to the mound to get you to come out so they can ambush you. If I think that is the case I will just yell "break it up" after I brush off the plate. If they want to discuss something they have to come to me. YMMV

I do something similar.  I brush off the plate, then wait about ten seconds, then walk at a reasonable, confident pace to the mound, staying on the side that lets the coach see me coming.  If that doesn't work, when I arrive I ask the coach if he is going to make a pitching change.  If not, then I say, Ok, let's play ball, or something like that.  Things almost always break up at that point.

In a game this past weekend I got to the mound, and asked if there was going to be a pitching change.  The coach actually said, "I'm getting on them for that last play."  I was a bit surprised that he thought this was a good reason for everyone else to be waiting around while the clock is ticking (a timed tournament game).  I said, "Let's play ball."  And, they broke it up.

So, no, the coach should not get extra time if he is lighting them up.

I brush the plate, record the visit and walk to the mound and ask him if he is sticking with his pitcher? If yes, then let's go. If no, let's get the new guy in here.
