So my partner and I are calling a 10u game. Game is going typical, 3-0 HT. I call a strike that one coach doesn't agree with, yelling down the baseline at me. My partner on bases tells him to calm down and he responds by asking him what he's going to do about it, and this leads to  his ejection.

Next pitch is an obvious outside ball, and from behind me I hear a loud strike call imitating my call. I turn around  to see the coach there, and after some yelling he finally leaves the park.

Game goes on, and HT is batting, last pitch is a strike three. I check my watch to see 38 seconds left. I call the game. Both teams coaches come running out at me saying there should still be time on the clock. We leave the field and parents are surrounding us yelling at us calling us jackasses, dumbasses, idiots, etc. We actually cannot leave because parents have blocked our path to the parking lot. A coach starts screaming at us and parents begin to clap to this. My partner and I kept our cool telling him this wasn't how to be a sportsman in front of the kids, and at some point found a hole and quickly left to the parking lot.

Once at our car (we carpool), We were talking to some other umpires at the park about what just happened, when a car drives by and shouts "Way to blow the game f*&^tards" and throws a cup of soda at us. I waved back at her when the car screeched to halt and the driver, a coach, jumped out and began sprinting towards us. Out of natural reaction, I pushed the man down after he tried to tackle a fellow umpire (not my partner). Soon after several more parents arrived to try and brawl it out with us. We stood by our cars, and continued backing away and pushing these men back. Soon a small crowd of people joined yelling at us. Someone at some point called the police, and when they arrived, I watched my partner tackled to the ground and cuffed, and as another umpire was forced to the ground with a taser.

All four of us umpires were arrested (not booked) and ONLY ONE coach was arrested (was booked for assault).

Needless to say, we are not going back to those fields ever.

Why did you remain any time at all after the game?

I could repost my recommendations BUT it seems to upset some people on this forum.

I absolutely assure you none of this post game crap would have happened to me.

I learned my lession long ago.

You had time still on the clock - why are you ending the game?

Why are you hanging around the field after the situation you just describe?  Get the hell out of there.

How did you "wave" back at the car that threw a cup of soda at you?

Lots of lessons for you and your partner to learn here.  First with how the situation was created in the first place and how it escalated based on your continued presence at the complex post-game.

I agree with all of this. ^^^

Plus with all of this going on not one Umpire calls 911?

Get in your car an leave!!!! Immediately!!!

I agree with BigUmp. This wouldn't have happened to me. But then again  we have been trained to harm people with just a stare!

If SH*# hit the fan during the game and people won't let you leave, you leave the complex, immediately when you get to your car.  No sticking around to chit chat with friends.  Find a gas station in the next town over and change there.

Sounds like they should have gone to a different state to change!

that's funny, .......we had a 10u travel game last night and never heard a peep!  As a matter of fact, we were thanked by both teams as we left with "great job guys" ....

post game we were discussing how much fun the 10u level can be and how much trouble people have (stories from this site)  ......

my biggest issue .....  strike 3, look at watch, .... :38 seconds left and you called the game ..........  sorry bud, you've got to play that.....the time limit did not expire before the third out, and the inning starts as soon as out 3 is recorded....

and guys, they did TRY to leave the field right away, their mistake was yapping in the parking lot afterwards....

CAVEAT: I'm not condoning the parents / coaches actions ANYWHERE in this post, but this situation was very easily prevented.....

I have seen guys try to end a game with 5-10 minutes left. I just tell them NO! You can leave if you want but I'm finishing the game!

Agree, this was the match in the can of gasoline as far as I can tell.  And Jeff, I should have said leave the complex, not the field.  Hanging around in the parking lot for more than the 10 seconds it takes to get behind the wheel and get the car in gear was a bad move, especially after the issues getting off of the field.  It doesn't say in the post but I'm assuming these guys parked near everyone else, if so that's a bad move too (unless there were no other options).

Who is keeping the official clock?

Sorry guys if I am keeping the clock AND it has been a crappy game with 38 seconds left I am gone.

Whenever I am arriving at a ballpark, I check out and sort of plan for my route of escape after the game. If there is any static during the game with coaches or fans, I am in my car and gone immediately.

My association I work for says not to start any new innings with less than 5 minutes on the clock. Having said that, 38 seconds matters in  a 3-0 game especially if the team that's down had bases loaded and only 1 out with the best hitter coming up (not saying that's the situation, but it's a good reason why coaches would come unglued if you called a game with 38 seconds left). Gotta let the three outs happen. Unless you use a drop dead rule, but even then, the last batter gets to finish his at bat and the game plays on until he reaches base or has been put out.

As far as everything else, I'll tell my buddies I'll call/text them later and I'm getting the heck out. end of story.

I live in a boring town, crap like this would be all over the front pages of the newspapers.

I am OK with 38 seconds and calling the game. Small potatos.  A minute before is safe, but once inside a minute?  Really?  That's one sweep of the plate time. I mean, really??

I will mark this thread to see if anyone can find any news on this.

I dont get it.

So if you have a 1:50 time limit its really a 1:45 time limit?  Or is the 1:50 a drop dead time limit?

We have a "no new inning time limit" and a drop-dead limit here for rec ball (limits are separated by 10 minutes), and if there's time left on the no new inning clock at the conclusion of an inning, we start a new one.  Plate umpire is the official timekeeper.

I:50 drop dead with now new inning with less than 5 minutes to go. The last part just keeps everyone from going through the hastle just to have one batter come up and end the game.

Found this - not sure if it's the one being discussed.

SODDY DAISY, TN. (WRCB) -- During the last week in April, six people were arrested in Soddy Daisy for disorderly conduct after a disagreement about the rules of a little league baseball game.

Billy Petty, president of the Soddy Daisy Kids Club says, "Perception is reality. It didn't matter who was at fault. These people are adults and it is their responsibility to control their emotions."

Police say there was plenty of arguing, but no punches were thrown.

"Both people involved in the situation, this is not what they wanted. Other people got involved and it got out of hand," says Petty.

We do know a young girl suffered a broken ankle after being trampled by someone running to the argument.

Petty says this is not the example they try to set for young kids.

"It is our goal to provide a safe place for kids in these sports and that is what we do and it may be common in other parts of the country but here it doesn't happen and it is unacceptable and we won't accept it."

As competitive as games can be on the field, Petty says it can be worse in the stands.

He says this is the first incident like this to happen since he's been president.

He just hopes the groups can learn from their mistakes.

"The kids get to see what happens when adults don't act how they should, and they see us punish them."

Those involved were charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct
