Right. The forum has engineers who can explain this better, but any collision involves kinetic energy, based on the mass and velocity of the objects. When the mask goes spinning off, the faster and farther it goes, the more energy is in the mask, instead of your noggin.

 

Helmet should be tight; mask should be loose.

I'm not sure I agree about his mask being too tight.

 

From what I see I think it was just a square shot seemingly dead center vertically and just at his right eye. That being the case more energy will make it through the mask and not dissipate through mask movement.

 

But just a reminder to everybody. if you wear a mask when you look straight down while wearing it it should hang about an inch or so from your chin. Some guyes even attach their harness to the ear flaps to make the mask more prone to come off in a collision.

These are the shots that are a concern with a bucket.  The energy is all absorbed straight back instead of dissipating with the mask spinning off.  My personal belief is I am glad he was wearing a mask and not HSM.

But the bucket is shaped differently: it is sharply angled in front in order to deflect more balls sideways, making a straight-on shot much less likely than a traditional mask. Compare:

No doubt the bucket is different, it has not been proven it is more protection than a traditional. It was thought so but guys are still getting concussions with buckets. If you like them, wear them, if you don't, stay with a traditional.

I switched to the bucket this year, not to avoid concussions, but to avoid getting hit by that stupid one-handed backswing that keeps knocking down MLB'ers.

I was at that game -- I was surprised (and impressed) he didn't leave when it happened.  IIRC he fnished that half and the next half inning before he left.  (And then I found myself distracted by seeing what they do with three umpires on the field . . . and I don't even umpire . . .)
