Ejection after warning

Our season just started last week and I had 3 games in the freezing cold evenings. Lows in the 20s.  Saturday it warmed up and I was feeling good, as my knees stopped squeeking. 1st inning, 2nd batter hits a nice clean single up the middle and throws his bat back like a shotgun blast, it taps my shin guard but the bat goes all the way back to the fence. As the play ends, I call time and tell the 12 year old he is being warned for throwing the bat. his HC was coaching third and I let him know he was being warned. Same bot, number 10, comes up and strikes out in 3rd. Bottom of the 5th, 2 out, with R2, he strokes a double to left center and throws the bat ( A reverse toss with velocity) and it hits me square on the left forearm as I am breaking for the mound. The pain was incredible, I could have screamed. R2 heads home and I have a play to call there, see it, wait.....Call the out.  That was 3. I walk to third, say, "Aren't you the boy I warned in the first?" He shakes his head, I say, "You sir, are done for the day!" Coach starts to talk, I say, "Before you say anything the game is halted until I can get some ice on this. I show him the already swollen forearm.  That is when I found out it was his son. Oh well.    Please teach him to drop the bat, coach!

 

I took a few minutes of ice before starting again with the indicator in my right hand.  Beautiful brown/yellow/blue bruise about the size of the top of the bat on my arm. Hurts like heck when I wiggle my fingers. I'm off until Tuesday night!

Mike, team warning in HS.  In some OBR leagues, I have had UIC's tell me it is per player.  Go with the local flow I guess is what I am saying.

I can work with that. The deal is I don't ask, I team warn and get rid of the next offender. My thought is the catcher and umpire shouldn't have to get hit 9 times because everybody gets a warning. I had an Allstar game a few years back with a weak PU. A batter slung his bat and rattled the catcher. The PU told the manager to talk to him. Later another kid rattles the catcher, the PU issued a warning. After the inning I told my PU it was for the team. Next inning another batter does it again, PU ejects him. Of course the first two batters were Mr. Attitude. The manager comes down to object, starting with he is the nicest kid on the team. Tough munchies coach, his other two knuckleheads got him tossed.

I haven't decided which I dislike more: stupid baseball players who can't hold onto a bat after a hit, or stupid hockey players who can't take a look before rifling a puck up the boards when I'm standing there.

Give me the bat-thrower any day.

The hockey players know you're there but don't give a SH*#. Half the time, after they hit you, they'll say "get the f$@k out of the way!"

I have never taken stitches as an umpire, but have as a hockey ref. I will take the bat anytime, as least there is a rule to stop it!

Remember a bat throwing warning is a team warning. 

That is a better decision to go with, Mike.  I will make sure I address the dugout next time directly. In this case the kid was on R1 and I warned him directly, but in front of his dugout.(That was just coincidence though). His Manager was on thid base coaching and I addressed him directly also.

I think your point is perfect, I could have addressed the dug out and used it as a teaching point.

I was doing a game on a league that warned balk warnings. I balked a kid on an elephant balk, they manager asked why no warning. I told him I wasn't written any local rule for a warning. He said ok and walked away.

Elephant balk usually refers to a balk everyone in the park will see and know, like kid dropping the ball on the rubber, stepping to first no throw, obvious start/stop, etc.

Elephant balk usually refers to a balk everyone in the park will see and know, like kid dropping the ball on the rubber, stepping to first no throw, obvious start/stop, etc.

Oh duh!  I was thinking of the "gorilla balk" Never mind.

When the F2 or myself get hit by a thrown bat I usually pick up the bat and walk it to the batter myself. I handed to him and tell him "Next time you hit one of us I'm going to kick your you may find yourself not playing the rest of the game..."
