Jr High Game - FED

I am BU in B

R1, 0 outs.

Batter hits a groundball up the middle that the F6 fields on the 1B side of 2B.  He's a good 3 feet from the bag, and throws it to F3 for a nice Bang-Bang Out.  I make the call and turn around to see R1 jogging off the field as if he's out.  I wait for him to leave the field, make a nice suttle "Out" guesture and go back to A for the next batter.

I didn't make a "Safe" call because in my opinion F6 never made a play on the runner.  R1 just assumed he was the start of the twin killing, jumped up and ran off the field.

Between innings, I let the manager know what his runner did (I've known him for a while and do alot of his games each season).  He just shook his head and laughed.

Should I have made a "SAFE" call even though there wasn't a play???

Thoughts????

Chances are pretty good even if you had given a safe mechanic the runner wouldn't have seen it. No play = no call. I wonder why his coaches didn't see him start to retreat and tell him to get back on the base??? Looks like a good call on your part.
