I finally found a situation where this makes sense. Long fly down the LF line. I bust it down the line for F/F, GRD, HR. By the time it hits the fence (fair) I'm pretty much where I would be for reading runner advancing when I have R1 play at 3B. I announce I have 3B since I'm already there. Couple of steps to get angle and... He got you right there! BANG! Must admit, it looked good, my being there and actually banging the out. Even got a few "Good hustle, Gregg" comments from HCs.

I've also had it work once. Wasn't down the LF line but a gapper to RF/CF. Partner initially paused but it was apparent he didn't need to go out, this baby was headed for the fence. I don't know if he got caught up with the runner or was too late in pivoting or what, but he didn't make it to the infield till the runner was past him and nearly to 2nd. He was an older guy to begin with but doing ok....still, he never would have made it to even the mound before the runner got to 3rd in full sprint. As it turned out, I was 3/4 of the way to 3rd anyway and saw him getting hung up, so called him off, took the play, and everything worked out great.

Yes thats one of tthe times I talked about in whatever other thread we had on this recently.  Now, did your partner head for the plate in case of an overthrow at third? :fuel: (hah! I just today saw the smilie link)

As a matter-of-fact he did. :no::bang:

This guy is one of a few that doesn't call HSV, and just won't accept that HP can handle plays at 3B and home. I pregame/postgame every time I work with him. He won't not rotate home.

I had to stop here because that sounds to me like a "trouble ball". Go out on a HR, please.

BU go out on a fly ball to LF?  Is that what you're saying?

By 'headed for the fence' I mean it was apparent it would be a base hit in the gap, not a HR. He paused but only slightly...once I saw him start to come into the pivot, I moved up the line to 3rd. It was then that he either got hung up with the runner or slowed down for something, cause he was barely on the grass by the time I called him off.

Well you always need to be ready to cover for your partner (and that applies to all of us and to BU helping PU as well) but thats completely different from having this be the mechanic.
