again, got a manual reference? All I have is 2 man, and it says to square to the plate. Why different in 3 man? How about 4 man?

Your feet are square to the grass but your upper body is twisted just a bit to the pitcher or plate.  The next play you will have is the steal at second and you just need to turn to get it.

 

It's not like two man where you need to split the difference so you can move for the pickoff at first.

I'm not sure the "square to the dugout" positioning is in any manual, but it's taught that way at clinics.  It lessens the time it takes you to turn with the ball on a steal play at 2nd. (It may have another practical reason, I'm not sure)  The only time you do it is with R1.  Any other time you're in the regular C position.

I should say as U3 it is the only time you're in Deep B or C.  As U1, you're in Deep B with R2 or R2/R3 with fewer than 2 outs.

Look in the CCA and the PBUC 3 man.. your feet and shoulders are square tot he dugouts..

I would quote the PBUC 3 man manual here, but I don't want to be called a slave to the book...
square up to the dugout, you don't need to see any pickoffs at 1st, only steals of 2nd. Now, if R1 steals, all you have to do is turn and look. Gain a couple steps if you can and now are right on top of it. Also, with R1 only, U3 has the choice of standing behind B and C, squared to the dugout. Whichever feels more comfortable for taking the steal.

Personally, I prefer the 2nd base side. With a lefty pitching as in the video, I would almost never be in deep C.

In CCA mechanics you have to be in Deep C with a LH batter.  They want you on the 3B side for check swings since the umpire on the open side rules on check swing appeals again now.

You don't need to see the pickoff at first, but I do like being on the 1B side of the mound when there is a LH pitcher.

 

I move pretty well on the field and I still hate Deep C.  Deep B replicates the positioning for 2-man (Actually makes it better because you can just turn with the ball and get set).

Me, too.  The tough steal calls are the swipe tag and you see that much better from Deep B than from Deep C and its easier to read that one will be coming -- if the throw is nearly at you as the umpire you can't move closer to the base so your in a good spot for the swipe tag.
