it's someone with many years "experience" who is still making "rookie" mistakes and is generally impervious to changing his ways.

We see this version of ol' Smitty a lot in my part of the country.

He's a close cousin to the guy that thinks other umpires going to camps/clinics are being know it alls or show offs.

Gosh, those are the guys who really get under my skin. More than Ol' Smitty for sure. In the long run it doesn't bother me, except when I hear people talk about how awesome of an umpire so-and-so is and it just proves that they don't know what they're talking about.

Smittys fall in two catagories, the ones that are untrained youth baseball guys that wear league gear, shorts etc. The other group are guys that have worked a number of years and don't think they need to learn or improve. This is not a paid/unpaid difference, they come in both areas.

I have to second Stan's statement about most of us starting out as a Smitty, I know I certainly was one. I worked LL for eight years, got pretty good for having no training, never saw a rulebook, mechanics book or a clinic.
