Stolen Ejection

Second game of a Mickey Mantle (16U) double header yesterday. 2 man and I am BU. I'm in the C position and PU appeals a check swing to me and I say he didn't go. DC, from the dugout, yells out and complains that I missed it and how can I not call that one when I called one earlier in the game on his batter. I call time and give him the stop sign with a firm, "that's enough." He then says "you're terrible" and before I can give him the boot, PU yells down to him and ejects him.

After the game, I let him know that I didn't appreciate him inserting himself into the situation, and that I can fight my own battles. I also told him that since he was the one that gave him the hook that he had to write the ejection report. He's lucky I'm pretty easy going, because I know quite a few guys that would have ripped him a new one for stealing the ejection.

I tend to tell them that check swing are not up for discussion. That is black letter law, almost anything else out of his mouth is going to punch his ticket. The PU needs to give you a chance to toss him, if you pass then he can get the ejection.

Exactly. It was hard for me to believe that a coach wanted to be tossed from a summer HS baseball game over a check swing, but the idiocy of some coaches knows no bounds. It was top 5 of the second game of a DH, so maybe it was past his nap time.

Maybe this is just me, but on the field I have a partner. We work together, as a team. You are mistaking the actions of your partner as something personal against you. Each umpire has equil authority in making an ejection. Perhaps when he saw your arm wasn't swinging to eject him after making a personal statement about your umpiring, he felt his determination for an ejection was met. Were I a betting man I would have to say your partner was looking out for you in making that ejection not trung to show you up or make you look bad. Just because he pulled the trigger faster than you might have doesn't mean you can't "fight your own battles" whatever that means, we're there to make judgements, enforce rules and manage the flow of the game, not "fight" Be grateful you have someone who has your back and has a spine of his own to act.

I never said he was doing anything personal against me, nor trying to show me up or trying to make me look bad. Seriously, where are you getting that? He simply inserted himself in a situation where he was neither needed, nor wanted. And "fight my own battles" is an expression. Of course I am not out there to "fight" anyone, but when a coach crosses the line, I don't need my partner to intervene. However, if I have ejected a coach and he doesn't want to get off the field, I would hope and expect my partner to have my back and help the coach to find the exit.

I agree grayhawk, while both of you have the authority to toss, the calling umpire or the one in the direct discussion should be the first in the ejection line. By stepping in his has weaken the perception of the umpire's authority.

I don't know, in slow pitch softball we have two man crews. I had a plate Umpire who wanted to make every call except those at second.

He was pretty dang fast and was used to single man crew so I let him.

Even if I booted a call all I had to do was give up the appeal and now it was his call to.

Since I did not have an ego these games were one step above collecting money for a forfeit !
