In a 13 year old Babe Ruth Tournament where the kids are pretty new to the big field I've finally found the truth. That for any of us who have trouble determining what constitutes a balk, please, please, please, find an "All Star Rec Coach" at this level and ask them. I was helped 3 times in one inning by both coaches. Their knowledge, and understanding in unreal. I am now convinced, Inolonger need to attend clinics. No more will I spend hours studying rule books. I certainly don't need to read all of your ridiculous posts, because I've finally discovered the truth. Ask a rec coach.

And when you are convinced of their wonderful insight, please give me a call, because I have a beautiful bridge that spans NJ to NY for sale, and I can let you have it for a very good price.

I totally agree! If you need the correct answer to a ruling ask the coach. There is no need for rules books of any kind. They are a waste of money.

Had a 13-14 rec coach tell me that after his runner was called out for a running lane violation after a catchers throw on a bunt went right off the Batters helmet that he had never heard of it. He tried to tell me because his field did not have a running lane marked the rule did not apply. Had to laugh and tell him they can mark it or not but it is there every game.

soapbox,

WOW!!! You OWN the George Washington Bridge?!?! Cool!

Oh, and whatever you do, don't ever watch the Evans balk video, because then you will NEVER develop the average rec Coach's mastery of the intricacies of the balk rules.

JM. I used to really respect you, but you've read too much into my scenario and quite frankly I'm embarrassed by your response. I don't own the GW Bridge, it was the Gothels Bridge. I can understand your assumption though. It's ok though, my partner for game 1 and then different partner for game 2 seem to have the same mastery of what a balk is. When I asked my partner if he saw something that I possilby missed, he said, "well you do know the pitcher must step off before he throws to 1B." Thanks partner, I've got if from here.

Yes they are a font of knowledge. Next time Im calling balls and strikes from a bucket in the dugout, evidently thats the perfect angle.

Say what you want, but I foresee myself doing this for at least one pitch at some point in the future. I get tired of the stupidity of coaches in general, and I might make a point by doing this. Unprofessional? Yes. Funny? You bet!

MS game early in the season. HC is the english teacher or something. Looks completely out of place. he bought himself a FULL UNIFORM. Most guys wear the hat, pants, turfs, and team color BP jacket. This cat had team jersey complete with # and name. He comes to me on a whacker I called out at the plate and wants to argue. I give him the whole schpiel about angles and timing. He proceeds to tell me it was a tie. Tie goes to the runner. I said sorry coach. I got him out. You're an IDIOT! EVERYONE KNOWS TIE GOES TO THE RUNNER! Good night coach. You can spend the rest of this game in the dugout.

Everything I know about the rules I learned from the Tim He-who-shall-not-be-named and Joe Morgan school of umpiring and home economics.

I missed those. I opted instead for Joe Morgan's how to : Hair care and Automotive Repair courses.
