I worked my first College game today. Yes it was community college but nevertheless it was great ball.

I was BU and Paperipper was PU. He had a great zone today and great hustle.

I had a few bangers which I believe I got correct. There was one that the coach said I missed but I believe I didn't.

We had a tag-up where the runner left early but the defense made an improper appeal.

I loved it. I would give up working 3 rec games to do 1 college game anytime!

good job... on the games guys.. Question how did the defense appeal wrong, or what did they do?...

and If you ever get to work College on a regular basis, it becomes hard to go and work down. Heck I did 3 HS games last year, and 1 I took cause it was at the Kansas City Royals Stadium..LOL

You should always work better baseball, it will make you a better umpire.

Fly ball to F8, R2 left early. Beats the throw. Everyone is yelling conflicting info at F5, ball gets thrown to three different players. Finally, F5 gets it back and calls time, then tags the runner standing on third. Well, nothing. Everybody's whining, F1 toes the rubber, I put it in play, and instead of stepping off and appealing to second, he pitches. Kinda a cluster, and we had to explain to DC after the inning what happened and why R2 wasn't out.

Once F5 requested time and it was granted and he tagged R3 to me its considered a failed appeal attempt. They only get one try so even if the pitcher had correctly appealed afterwards it would have been no good.

Balls dead when time called. Can't have an appeal on a dead ball. That means the 1st appeal attempt would be after the ball is put back into play.

You may be correct but I say they still attempted to appeal.

Lets see what others have to say.

NovaScotiaBlue is correct. Appealing during a dead ball is nothing. It is no different than trying a hidden ball play. Time is called, meeting at the mound and the fielder takes the ball to the base. The ball can't be put in play if the pitcher doesn't have it so no balk, no out. Except in Fed dead appealing isn't an attempt.

agreed............at a certain time in every umpires career, there is very little development that can be gained by doing more bad baseball.....

I really don't do high school anymore.. But in FED you can have a dead ball appeal right?

Yes, read my reply and I allowed for that. In FED you can get a dead ball appeal, NCAA or OBR you can not. An appeal during a dead ball is nothing.

I like when there is a dead ball appeal in College or OBR... I just chuckle and ask what rules are we using today. When they tell me I just explain the rules...
