I saw these mechanics used in some Indy league ballgames. Wonder if they are in the PBUC or CCA books? I don't have them.

First: Indy league. Nobody on, 3 man crew. Every fly to LF where U3 went out the PU trailed the runner to 1B up to the 45' line and U1 started toward 2B kind of like a rim but in the middle of the dirt. He would have been on the outside if he continued to 2B. When the catch was made there were 2 umps looking at 1B, one in the middle of the 2B infield and one at the 45' mark. I'm guessing that if there was a drop and the BR was going to 3B (a rare possibilty at this level) that the PU would cross over to 3B. Is this a PBUC mechanic? At this level of play it looked like the right thing to do.

Second: Indy league 2 man crew. Nobody on, base hit to LF, routine single, no possibilty of a double. U1 would stay on dirt keeping ball in front of him and runner in periphery. This direction would then take him into position at deep B. No pivot. looked like this would work as long as your instincts were good.

In 3 man, if U3 goes out, U1 comes in and pivots and has BR to 3rd, just as in two man. If U1 goes out, U3 comes in and has BR at 2nd and 3rd. PU goes up 1st base line and has any subsequent play on BR at 1st.

Instead of your 3 man OP being an "advanced mechanic" it seems like it more of a mechanics breakdown.

No breakdown. They did it like that every time the sit happened.

I dont quite know the right word for it but there are some experimental mechanics that have U1 staying on the outside to take any play at second.

It might even be an option in next years CCA stuff.

Some advanced mechanics used have an umpire taking plays on the outside. If this positioning hinders your ability to cover any subsequent plays you are responsible for, you should not do it. It makes no sense for U1 to cover plays at 2nd on the outside when he has additional responsibilities of taking that runner to 3rd. There are enough umpires that have a hard time taking a runner from 2nd to 3rd from the inside let alone trying from the outside 10 feet further away. Advanced mechanics are used in conjunction with basic mechanics when umpires know their responsibilities and are able to recognize situations in order to develop better angling/positioning within the confines of those responsibilities. Advanced mechanics are not used as a replacement for basic mechanics nor an excuse to modify basic mechanics. From experience, being able to use these advanced mechanics requires recognition of situations and various criteria prior to determining the best way to cover a play. There are whys, hows, and whens when adapting new mechanics.

That being said, pro mechanics are crew/chief determined. This is easier to do since the crew works together every day. They may do something entirely different, but they are all on the same page and they do what works for them. In college, we do not have that luxury of working with the same crew all year. It is for this reason that we cannot take what we see from one level and try to apply to another.

I missed the indy part in the origianal OP. Who knows what philosophy they were working.

Hopefully not. It works just fine and isn't broke, no need to fix it.

these advance plays are called rimming ( when an umpire takes a play on the outside).. but it really should be done, if there is an over throw or the ball gets away the umpire has to try and run with a runner towards 3rd...

I am assuming from the sentence you meant "shouldn't be done."
