Blown calls happen. I'm not going to bust any of the umpires here for that. S--- happens... But if s--- is going to happen, it needs to be handled right. And IMHO, it was not here... I'm also not going to blame the umpires for the Red Sox scoring 3 runs afterwards. The Tigers should play better ball if they want to avoid that.

First, on the foul ball that was incorrect in two aspects, the PU needs to make a call... Don't just hug F2 and look down the line to your friend... You are right there, even if you are straight lined, give your best shot at it... Following your best guess, if you feel any umpire may have gotten the call better, go to ALL umpires. Not just your U1... You made U1's call your call, when U1 is 100 feet away from the play.

Second, on the ejection... What the heck? Why is Leyland arguing with an ump who had nothing to do with the play in question in the first place, and then WHY is the 1st base ump ejecting a manager who has retreted to his dugout from 80+ feet away!? The altercation was 100% OVER, and he CHOSE to further it with an ejection. Leyland had every right to be pissed when that happened.

This is just my :2cents:. Feel free to disagree.

Yes, the PU needs to make the call but it is a call that you can't always see clearly. In the games I work the base umpire will signal catch or not on these by opening his hand, or making a fist (with his hand still down by his side). It is the PU's option to take the BUs version or not. Don't know the communication level here; maybe the same. Hugging the F2 is a way of conveying that he, the PU, might not have had the best look, setting up that check to U1.

I don't know what Leyland said but if he's FBombing or similar, someone has to get him.

Tshida gets a gold star on this. It looks like Nelson is coming up with the out call on his own and then sees Welke give him some info that he believed the ball was not caught. Had Nelson come up strong on the catch all of this would have been prevented.

Nelson was trying to get a look at Welke but the F2 was in his way. Once he got his check he called it foul. The idiot announcer said it wasn't even close. If it wasn't close Nelson would have been sure and Welke wouldn't have missed it. I'm sure from that far away it looked like it skipped to the glove instead of in his glove on the ground. Knowing Leland's inability to shut up I'm sure he said something stupid from the dugout to get tossed. What wasn't handled correctly? The PU wasn't sure, looked to U1 for info. U1 gives him a no catch, he calls it foul. Leland goes out between innings and talks to the CC who had nothing to do with it. Then I assume he yakked at U1 from the dugout and he dumps him. CC peels him off and gets him off the field.
