I am confused

We complain about the use of Instant Reply to change calls in a game, but we continue to tear apart Professional Umpires judgment calls by watching replays. :D

'tear apart' ? Hardly. Like I said, I WOULDN'T WANT to make that call!

Come on, don't tell me you didn't slow that down or try to catch the slo-mo?

no, I didn't slow that down, or try to catch the slow-mo. It's a banger, I leave it alone and expect that the best umpires in the world did the best possible job they could. 1

On a banger like that, the B/R has to beat the throw. To me, that's at best a tie - and no, I'm not too worried about the still picture, because it's called as it happens.

Out!

This is interesting, ......and I'll be honest, I do understand where 1dumbquestion is coming from,...I get it, and it's a great way to think about it. This is good discussion:nod:

But, based on this, ....let me pose a question, ...a hypothetical:

YOU are u1 (MLB ump)....

Do you take a look after the game to see if you got it? OR, ...for any close play you have regardless of where you are on the field? Don't you wonder, or want to know?

Just curious ......

I personally would want to know.

Now I've talked with some MLB guys who are on both sides of of if they watch it, but I think more do than don't.

Thanks for getting this started Warren. :yippie:

I'm not trying to make this a 'pi$$ing' match, but just an honest question.

I'm with you Warren, ...I would want to know, .....but I'm not an MLB guy either :HD:

Also, when you look at some of the 'plays' from the season so far, there are articles from MLB afterward that say the tape we reviewed by such&such umpire, so maybe Warren's comment of "I think more do than don't" might just be correct .......

I think the point isn't if the umpire that made the call wants to go frame by frame to see if he got it right, it's that there are some of us on here that don't do that on every close call another umpire makes. Whether or not they got the call right, or kicked it, I'm not too worried about finding out. Now if it's a "third world" play, or it involves a unique rules application; I'll break it down in the interest of helping me improve. A "bang-bang" play that can go either way does nothing for me, and for me, going frame-by-frame to possibly show a umpire missed a call he made in real time seems more like a "gotcha" that's not worth the effort.

Just my opinion...

DEFINATELY love to do that, ...like that run-down play the other day w/ the Royals and A's ...that was classic! :yippie:

That's just it, ...it's not in that context at all, at least for me it's not. These guys are the best for a reason. And 99.9% of the time, they nail it! Sometimes they miss. It's more of a matter of seeing myself what happened. It's not a "these guys suck-fest" or a "gotchya" by any means. I can see how it may come across that way, but it's not......

I like to find out...but that's me:cheers:

Around here, a few of us get invited to do intrasquad and other fall and winter D-I games (UCLA, Pepperdine, CSUN, USC, Loyola Marymount, etc.). At the UCLA games, I have the most control, so we rig two small cameras: behind center field, and behind the plate a few rows. After the games, we sit in the video room or at my nearby office and break it all down, sometimes for hours. Then, on my own, I watch hours more, trying to dissect everything I do behind the plate and on the bases. For the games, we work mostly three-man, with a few four-man games as well, so we dissect all our rotations and reads and angles, and of course, our calls. We also critique each other's plate games.

AND WE DO ALL THIS FOR GAMES THAT DON'T REALLY EVEN COUNT! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE UMPIRES AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL WHO DON'T.

It makes you a better umpire far more rapidly. It also gets you focused on any bad habits and getting rid of them almost overnight. And it's drastically easier to take criticism from your peers when you're watching yourself objectively along with them.

It takes guts to watch a replay of yourself kicking a call with your peers. I didn't have any kicks, but I had some bad reads, some blown coverages and some missed pitches that the replays revealed.

I can't believe that there are umpires who feel that all of this technology is anything but helpful. I love being held to an even higher scrutiny than the live witnesses and participants hold me to.

MLB supplies every umpire with game film with notes to watch and evaluate. The films are both of good plays or mistakes. I think they get their whole plate job.

Ahhh, thanks for that!! :D

HHhmmmmm.....

So, I guess me kind of wanting to know how it all actually broke down is fairly normal.....:D ;)
