I have an idea...

If you're like me you're looking forward to the All-Star game and may have voted a time or two for some of your favorite players.

What I'd like to see is a ballot to vote for the announcers. I don't want to be stuck with He-who-shall-not-be-named & Buck. There are so many great announcers out there who know their stuff. The king of announcers would be Vin Scully (IMO)

How about allowing the local markets to use their own announcers? I'd love to hear Mike Shannon call the All-Star Game -- but I don't want the whole nation to do it.

lets have Vin Scully by himself......or if we have to have a partner let him team up wth Jon Miller.....who does a mean Vin Scully imitation..............

A bit off topic, but a friend of mine's father was a local sports announcer and would call all the MLB games for a local radio station. Here's what they did as late as the 1960's..

He would be sitting in a broadcast room in Norfolk, VA and would be reading off a sports ticker. He'd have a ton of by todays standards chincy sound effects and essentially make the game up.

The sports ticker would just send him a snippett like "Berra singles to leftfield" and would make it out as if he were there reporting the game live. Sometimes he'd get wrong information or miss plays but would have to keep going and act it up. It sounds really cool.

Sounds neat. I've always admired a good play-by-play announcer, especially when listening to hockey or basketball. The best can paint a picture well enough for you to "watch" it.

My father used to listen to MLB games over AM radio when I was younger (mid-80s). We didn't have TV coverage of the games, so we'd go out to the car and listen while parked in the driveway. It was a blast.

A number of years ago, the local channel in New England had Curt Gowdy as a guest in the booth. They asked him to do a play-by-play for an inning. I sat back, closed my eyes, and was 12 again...

yes, I remember Curt Gowdy as well........funny how that can transport you back to childhood so easily....

Often on saturday afternoon games, I turn off the TV and go out to the garage and turn on the radio and wash the car or tinker in the garage....reminds me of my dad and me when I was a kid......

I enjoy the game and remember my dad...........all at the same time

I grew up listening to games on the AM radio also. I still love to listen to a game on the radio, especially with those colorful announcers that make you feel like you are watching live. BTW, my wife hates when I put a baseball game on the radio :)
