Home team up, bases loaded, 2 outs, 3-2 count, rookie partner at C.

Pitch comes in, belt high but inside, and I call ball four. Somehow, everyone but me and the scorekeeper think it's strike three. F2 rolls ball towards the pitcher. Fielding team starts to walk off the field. Batter looks at me and starts towards first base. Partner looks away and starts towards third. HT Coach yells, "It's a walk!"

I'm standing at the dish - I watch the runner from 3B cross the plate, scoring the run. The batter/runner hits first and rounds towards second. The fielding team recovers and tags the runner between first and second before any other runner crosses the plate.

My call - "batter/runner out, run scores, end of inning"

HT Coach yells - "Dead ball on the walk, blue!"

My answer - "Coach, when the runner advances after taking first, he becomes eligible to be tagged out."

Am I right here? Did I do it correctly?

And I apologize for my absence from the forums - cancer took me from behind the mask, but back now and calling games. Win!

As you describe, you did it correctly. No dead ball on a walk. The only live ball base award...(no HBP) right?

Right - inside pitch for ball four.

Entitled to first on the walk, but no farther... As long as your rookie partner in C made that out call and not you, everything here is fine... How does no one know you called ball four? Especially a catcher... That's odd.

And congrats on winning your battle! That is the toughest fight there is on Earth, and I couldn't imagine going through it.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Unfortunately, partner had back turned, thinking inning was over. I made the call. I probably overstepped my bounds there, but I had the only eyes on the play.

Is your strike call and especially your strike 3 call not more obvious than your ball call. I couldnt imagine anybody confusing that as im very loud on strikes just for that reason. Dead ball on walk WOW amazing. How you handled it was fine and correct if your partner doesnt have eyes on it someone has to.

My strike call is a verbal w/ hammer, and the strike three call is a 2 step "step back (strike) and shoot the bow (three)". I have no clue how anyone mistook it. I just stood up, said ball four, take the base, and it all started there.

Don't stand up until after you make the the call on a ball.

More people believe that than you might think. Don't know why. In a youth game they'll yell that when a walked runner continues on to 2B.

Probably nothing wrong with the way you called it and handled it. But as others have said, have good timing, stay down to call the ball, stay down an extra beat if the catcher has secured the pitch and there is no need to clear.

That timing and body language, established throughout the game, will clue everyone in when it really counts.

Good job, Run scored on the walk, bases were loaded, touching first and then stepping off, puts that runner in a position to be tagged out, Maybe a point towards first with the left hand while saying ball four would have paused the circus also.

Congrats on the battle, Praise God!!

The only live ball base award...(no HBP) right?

Isn't use of detached equipment on a batted ball a live-ball award ?

THe ball remains live untill the end of play but then is dead to make any award so its a dead ball aaward.

You are correct, thank you sir. Somehow that didn't click in my head.
