Not sure if you all have been following the World Cup at all, but an interesting subject since we've been talking about the MLB umpires and their misfortunes lately. It seems the World Cup is having issues with it's officials also. There was the incident that a goal got taken away from the US and another incident with the referee of the Brazil vs Ivory Coast match.

The goal taken away from the US was absolute garbage. That video has been analyzed over and over and over, and all broadcasters (including NON USA) have said there was no foul to be seen on a US player during that play....

That's what I've heard. I've also heard that there were 3 fouls on Slovenia on the play, so why that would nullify a US goal I have no idea. Haven't seen any replays or anything since this pos (government) computer won't let me!! Also, Portugal just pasted North Korea 7-0:wow:

The referee on the US game was on the line to be sent home. I think he was an alternate on a game yesterday but it is unlikely he will see the field again. I didn't see the Brazil game so I can say anything about that. In the US game I find it interesting that the referee on the line is getting smoked but nothing is being said about the center. First, he center can wave off the linesman. Second, he didn't have either violation on the defense either. He must have concentrated on the goal line and never looked at the play itself. He should have been at a better angle and a lot closer.

Since when were the referees in soccer not a problem? But in all fairness, FIFA doesn't know when to adjust their sport and do things right.

Now, I'll say right I've no idea if that's the case or not, but let's face it, the World Cup is big, big bucks, and do you suppose the officials are paid much money?

Only once have I heard anything about the testimony from the on-field players, and that was right after it happened, and maybe once the next day, but at least one USA player stated that the whistle was blown AFTER the ball was in the net. Does anyone think that FIFA is going to investigate the corruption angle, when they're on the world stage? Yeah, me either. It'd be like finding out the head linesman or referee in the Super Bowl was paid to ensure one team was at a distinct disadvantage... but only when a key score was made by the opposition.

I'm guessing that few, if any people thought Tim Donaghy (NBA) could have done what he did, but it was quite the shocker when that news was made public, wasn't it?

The US squeaked into the round of 16 with a 91st minute goal by Landon Donovan which also gave the US the Group C win. This was the US first win in the World Cup since 2002. The US now faces Ghana for a chance to move to the quarter finals.

I'm sure if the center followed his mechanics then the ball was in the net when the whistle was blown. The correct mechanic is to follow the ball in the net, then look at your line to see if he a has a foul or an offside call. If his flag is up and/or he hasn't run back to the starting point for a restart then the center blows the whistle. The line is in his first World Cup of his life. He may just be in over his head.

In the win yesterday there was a goal disallowed earlier in the game. It was disallowed on an offside. I assure that ball was in the net before it got killed too. It's hard to call offside on TV but they put up a line during the replay and the announncers said he was dead even. If you look at their feet, the defender's foot was at the onfield side of the line, the US player was on the goal side of it. A hell of a close call bt it looked correct.

I don't expect the US to go all the way but it would be nice to see them move at least one more round. In case nobody noticed there have been a ton of ties this time. We have done well to score what we have.

Now the diving has to brought under control. It is a card for diving but nobody calls it. The player that got red carded for elbowing the guy in the face when the guy into the other player and got hit in his chest was a horrible call and diving at it's worse.
