I wish I had audio at work. So I'm probably missing some of the pertinent info...

So Knight initially signaled foul tip for K3.

I assume somewhere that wasn't shown in the video the crew, or at least Knight & Gibson, got together and decided the ball hit the ground. The only explanation I can see for Geren being upset, especially w/ Gibson.

Am I close?

First, I think Knight had the initial call correct. From the straight forward view it appears he caught it cleanly. From the side, it looks like the ball might have touched the dirt AFTER Suzuki had it in control of the ball in the mitt the momentum of the pitch brought the glove further down.

Gibson seemed to have given Geren plenty of rope before pulling the trigger. I'm sure there was something said to earn the EJ....

the only reason the batter asked about it was hearing F2s mitt hit the ground, that ball was cleanly caught from all angles, no question.....

Yes cleanly caught and plenty of rope given. The talking heads sure let Greg have it being that they are experts in umpiring and all. It is easy to watch the play 3 or 4 or 5 times in slow motion and say it was a horrible call. From Greg's view in real time, it probably did look like it was dropped.

My only question, and I forgot to watch it last night from home with sound, is how did the call get to Gibson?

Did Knight ask? He was right there and made the correct initial call.

I didn't see Knight ask anything. From what I saw and what the talking heads said it seemed that Gibson just stepped in and said it hit the ground. Hard to tell if you weren't there watching it in real time.

You don't see it on video because they're running the replay at that point. No way would another umpire have jumped in on that.

I thought the same thing.

Who initiated the conference though? Knight seemed pretty confident in his call.

I thought his call was delayed until F2 shows him the ball, and then his signal was a bit weak/muted. Watch his mechanic for the foul tip - - it's close to the chest, barely noticeable, really... he does a quick 'double tap' with the right on the left hand, and that was that.

During the replay (I'm guessing) he'd have pointed down to Gibson and asked "Did it hit the ground?" and he likely got a very firm response.... that's when Green comes out.

From Gibson's spot, he probably thought he got the call right. It was close and I don't know if he could see the dirt which kicked up. If he was able to see that, I can definitely understand why he thought it hit the ground.

It's one of those things that he has less than 1/10 of a second to see everything and make a decision on what he saw. Tough call. If he was positive, then go with his call. If not, I would say go with PU's call. He probably was confident and sold his decision.

So, from that, I would say correct call based on what he believes he saw and possibly heard. It must be nice to look at IR and make the "correct" call for these announcers.

I agree. In real time, you just call what you see and move on.

Dirtydawg, 99%?!? more like 99.9% if I can replay it 6 times in slow mo.:TD:
