anyone wearing or at least tried the shock doctor gravity 2 stc mouth guard ? this is the guard that has been tested and doesnt seem to impair speech .ump-attire has had some feed back or maybe it was on this group , cant remember . i bought one on ump-attire and will try a game this week . after getting it molded i was practicing strike, out, fair, foul ect... calls . didnt seem to bother the speech . will take a little getting used to . dont know if i would only wear for games with older (bigger) kids throwing 65 or above only ? arent some MLB umpire's trying out the mouth guard this season ? any comments welcome.

I want to use a mouth guard, rally. But haven't found one I like including this one.

Now YMMV but I could not get the Shock Doctor guard to mold to my mouth well. Now I have a pretty good deal of experience with boil and bite type mouth guards, but after several attempts I couldn't get it to stay in place when I talked. So This one wasn't the one for me.

If you are interested Ump-Attire has a special price on them.

While I didn't have the best experience with it, If it works for you then that's what matters and for the $11 Ump-Attire has them for it's well worth a try.

ump-attire has a special on this mouth guard . normally 17.00 but for 11.00 . i think the jury is still out on the effectiveness , and to what degree it can help with concussions reduction . though there has been some good research done . d62 blue

I have been wearing one all season and I actually ordered another one last week to use when my current one wears out...cannot beat the $11 price tag.

Mine molded great and I really do not notice if it inpairs my speech. I have taken several shots to the head this year with the mouth guard in and it really seems to cause my jaw to rattle less. I am pretty sure that the mouth guard will be a new staple of my umpire gear.

I spoke to my dentist about the effectiveness of mouth guards in relation to concussions. He too admitted the research is all over the place. I note he has quite a practice going with custom mouth guards and is very knowledgeable.

He told me in his professional opinion they will help in certain kinds if concussions. He also offered anecdotal evidence by telling me that he has never had a patient return to him saying they have has a concussion of this type while wearing a mouth guard.

Unfortunately for me he is not a "licensed" provider for the custom mouth guard I'm interested in, and the product line he carries does not provide one similar to the one I'm seeking.

Here's a post I made about may mouth guard saga. http://www.umpire-empire.com/forum/showpost.php?p=35239&postcount=7

Once again I'm an advocate of mouth guards, especially for us as amateur umpires. We have to call our game that night , then get up and go to work in the morning. If we have headaches, nausea, grogginess etc from a concussion, it can effect our real jobs which is much more important.

I sparred for a few years when I was young and stupid (it was my way of staying in playing shape as I was approaching and passing age 30). I learned then that a mouth guard was for more than just protecting your teeth, but also for helping to keep your teeth clenched when you get tagged. But nearly the same protection level from concussions can be had from simply clenching your teeth as each pitch is about to arrive. I also bury my chin as much as I can, gear permitting.

When you umpire, you never get a second shot like when you're boxing. It's that shot that dazes you and makes you hang your mouth open that sets you up, and the one to the jaw or chin that follows knocks you out. In baseball, there is no following shot. You clench your teeth, bury your chin, get tagged, clear the snot from your nose, and go on. The best chin shot I ever took in a game was at about 90 m.p.h. and it didn't really even daze me, because I had my teeth clenched and my chin to my chest. Now, If I took that same shot with my jaw slackened, I would have been out on my feet, or in the worst case, out off my feet.

The mouth guard is fine if you want the ultimate protection, but it only really helps to keep your jaw tight and straight when you're dazed or exhausted.

Consult a boxing dentist and see what he says. But a regular dentist who hasn't taken any shots might not be the best guy to hand down the verdict on this.

Phew, there for a minute I thought I was going to have to pray for your umpiring imortal soul, being that it was about to commit the most deadly and most unforgivable umpiring sin. You know, the one that doesn't let you get into umpiring heaven. (Sorry, been watching too much Justified lately, and that preaching character kinda grows on you!!)

I have used mouth guard. Nothing like being able to comfortably open your mouth and be able to breathe, talk, drink etc with a mouth guard in. And the mouth guard is silicone.
